My Story…
On April 3rd, it will have been a year since I became an organ donor. Just over two years ago, my friend Marie-Eve, aged 31 at the time, was diagnosed with kidney failure. She was born with only one kidney and there had been complications since her infancy. Unfortunately her only kidney barely made it past the 30 year mark. I thus became a living donor and gave her one of my kidneys, although the surgery went extremely well, there were unforeseen complications and she lost the kidney within only 5 days. Just 3 short months ago, Marie-Eve bravely underwent yet another transplant and thankfully this time, the outcome was more than positive and nothing short of miraculous.
Unfortunately, a kidney transplant is not a cure but rather a temporary solution that is much more humane than dialysis and that offers the recipient a chance to live a “normal” life. By supporting kidney research and kidney health programs we can get one step closer to finding a more permanent solution.
