WHAT IS THIS CRAZY RACE?
SHALE "HELL" DIVISION (INDIVIDUAL):
Take your love of adventure racing and combine it with the most intense 10K Obstacle Course in America and you'll find yourself at SHALE "HELL" for the next 24 hours! Each lap is over 6 miles long and you'll navigate through 70+ obstacles along the way. Our never ending loops of obstacle madness will have you crying for more walls, ropes, ladders, poles, drags, carries, water traverse, the GREAT WALL and the infamous TARZAN SWINGS (just to name a few) only to have your last ounce of energy zapped at the Anaconda!
The first lap will require you to do EVERY obstacle. If you fail an obstacle, you can retry as many times as you like until you are successful...or...only after you have "failed" the obstacle then you can perform the penalty designated. "Skipping" an obstacle and taking the penalty in lieu of trying it is considered cheating and will not be tolerated. If you are caught skipping obstacles, you are no longer eligible for prize winnings. Subsequent laps will have different penalties in lessor amounts. It all depends what we decide for that lap ;-) You will be required to mark down on a chart/wipe board your time-in, lap count, penalties performed & time-out when you go out on your next lap.
RELAY TEAM DIVISION:
The TEAM RELAY division consists of 4 people (any combination of ladies and gentlemen). Only 1 person on the team is allowed out on the course at a time. When your team member comes in across the finish line, the next member goes out. Support from other crew members is permitted on course, but their "support" lap will not count. All team members are required to complete all obstacles each lap. If you fail an obstacle, then you need to complete the penalty for that obstacle (i.e. 25 spiderman pushups).
8 HOUR DIVISION (INDIVIDUAL):
This division is run as an individual and you will have 8 hours to complete as many laps as you can on the 10K course. This is just like our 8 Hr. Polar Bear Challenge in February each year, but without the snow!!! Failed obstacles require that you perform the designated number of spiderman pushups for that obstacle before you can move on to the next one.
JOURNEYMAN OPTION for 24 Hour and 8 Hour Divisions:
Sign up for the JOURNEYMAN option for the 24 Hours of Shale HELL or the 8 Hour Challenge. This disignation exempts you from performing penalties on failed obstacles, but you are also ineligible for prizes. So, come run the course without the pressure of completing all the obstacles and have a great time taking a more relaxed approach to competing at Shale Hill :-)

WHAT DO I BRING?
1) BRING A SUPPORT CREW PERSON :-) You should have a support crew member available to help you through the event. And, your crew members will need to register.
2) BRING A TENT & WHATEVER YOU NEED TO BE COMFORTABLE FOR AN OVER-NIGHT'S STAY OUTDOORS (tent, canopy, folding chairs, cot, SUNSCREEN & BUG SPRAY, coolers, ice, laterns, flash lights, head lamps, batteries, sleeping bag, your favorite blankie/stuffed animal, pillow, etc.).
3) FOOD - You will need to bring your own food and hydration for refueling between laps. We will provide water, bananas & chocolate mik throughout the duration of the race. There will be "no food vendor" on premises, but we have a general store and full-service family style restaurant within 1/4 mile of Shale Hill. There are 5 water stations throughout the course.
4) CLOTHING - August in Vermont can be lovely with temperatures ranging in the "buggy 90's & 80's" to down-right chilly with a cold rain in the middle of summer!! Plan on bringing multiple changes of clothing for running in hot weather to chilly and raining. HEAD LAMPS are mandatory for night running and be sure to stock up on batteries! Hydration packs are a great idea, but keep in mind to wear appropriate clothing to prevent chafing. BODY GLIDE or athletic cremes are highly suggested for those sensitive areas prone to chafing. There were several people last year who rubbed themselves raw with wet sweaty accessories on bare skin....ICK and OUCH! So, stock up on neosporin, bandaids, second skin, vet-wrap, sunscreen, bugspray, etc.
5) FOOTWEAR - BEWARE of the dreaded TRENCH FOOT!!! It is not recommended that you wear the same pair of shoes and socks for 24 hours. Bring as many changes of shoes and twice as many pairs of high quality socks designed just for this purpose. Cotton is the kiss-of-death and will hold water and sweat and then cause terrible blisters after hours and hours of running. Between laps you should air your feet out!! And change into a clean pair of socks after every lap at the very least!!! As Lieutenant Dan said to Forrest Gump & Bubba, "There is one item of G.I. gear that can be the difference between a live grunt and a dead grunt. SOCKS, cushion, sole, O.D. green." I want you boys to remember to change your socks wherever we stop!" There are also some great foot cremes on the market for long distance running to help cut down on friction.
6) ALL FOR ONE AND ONE FOR ALL! You are all here competing as individuals, but support each other as only a good team member should. Look out for each other and notify race staff of any problems with obstacles or injuries sustained by others on the course.
7) WEATHER - Shale Hill staff reserves the right to place a "hold" on racing should the weather conditions prevent you from competing safely. Last year we encountered intense fog in the late night/early morning hours making it impossible to see more than a few feet in front of you. A temporary hold was put on course for a couple of hours to prevent participants from getting lost and our ability to safely locate you.
