Our Shelter

The Humane Society of Durham Region was incorporated in 1988 under the name Durham Animal Welfare. We then became an independent operating affiliate of the Ontario S.P.C.A. under the new name Humane Society of Durham Region (HSDR).

The HSDR is made up of a Volunteer Board of Directors, staff members and volunteers. We are a community resource, dedicated to protecting and providing temporary shelter and comfort to all animals in need, while promoting adoptions and re-homing for unwanted, abused, neglected and abandoned animals. The HSDR promotes humane treatment of all living things and works within the law to respond to and investigate all complaints of cruelty and neglect.

The HSDR serves all of Durham Region and is a non-profit organization and no-kill shelter and does not receive any formal government assistance. We rely solely on the contributions of others in order to provide care and a home for the animals.

To provide compassionate care for abused, abandoned, and neglected animals in our community while they await their new beginning in life.

Our Vision

To provide care until a new home is found regardless of the time it takes, educate and inspire responsible pet/family relationships, and to work with like-minded community groups to the best of our ability.
