The Pride Run and walk is for everyone of every ability. For most it’s the enjoyment of taking part surrounded by like-minded and supportive people. Some run competitively and look to get a great time; many people run or walk to meet their own goal which could simply be about taking part. Some get together with friends and run or walk as a team. Some dress-up; some don’t. Basically, it’s your event to enjoy as you wish. So don’t worry about finishing times (unless you want to!) – just come along and enjoy the day.
The 2015 Pride Run and Walk is expected to raise around $10,000 for our two charities: Out in Schools and the VPS Pride Legacy Fund.

Explanation of Gender for Pride Run Registration
The Vancouver Frontrunners and Vancouver Pride Society are excited to present the first Vancouver Pride Run and Walk with a third race category to celebrate the gender diversity and vibrancy of our community. We invite you to register in the category with which you identify in terms of your gender or you can opt out altogether. We will be giving out prizing for top competitors in each of the three categories. During the registration process, you will find four categories:
a. Gender Variant
b. Female (including Cis/Trans)
c. Male (including Cis/Trans)
d. Not applicable
The term “cis” is an abbreviation for cisgender, which is defined as those whose gender identity matches the sex they were assigned at birth. The term “trans” is an abbreviation for transgender, which is defined as the state of one's gender identity or gender expression not matching one's assigned sex. Gender variant is an identity or gender expression that does not conform to dominant gender norms of male and female. For more information on terminology and information regarding gender, please visit: http://itspronouncedmetrosexual.com/2012/03/the-genderbread-person-v2-0/.
On the day of the event, universal Port-a-Potties will be made available at Brockton Oval. Signage and trained volunteers will support the safe and practical use of these spaces by all participants. We hope this facilitates everyone’s preparation for and participation in the event no matter where you identify along the gender spectrum.
We appreciate that gender is complex and nuanced in its form, expression, aspects, and terminology. We understand that these categories are far from all encompassing or representative of the full range of gender fabulousness. We are proposing the current categories as a starting point to foster discussion and to generate additional ideas to improve future events. We will be asking your feedback and suggestions during a post-event survey. We appreciate your patience as we work out the details of the nexus between gender and sporting events. And we look forward to collaborating with you in making this event as inclusive and inviting as possible. See you on July 25, 2015!

OUR BENEFICIARIES
We have two beneficiaries for this run. All profits will be donated 50/50 to Out in Schools and The PRIDE Legacy Fund.
Out in Schools:
Out in Schools engages youth through film in the promotion of safer and more diverse learning environments, free from homophobia, transphobia and bullying.
Homophobia, transphobia and bullying are serious issues facing today's youth, particularly queer youth. By bringing queer films to local high schools to facilitate discussion with youth on bullying, homophobia and stereotypes, we give youth a safer space to explore these issues. We aim to increase understanding through education to combat the issues threatening the safety of our classrooms for all students.
The Pride Legacy Fund
The Vancouver Pride Society fundraises through raffles, partner donations, general donations and other initiatives to offer micro-grants for local groups doing excellent work in our community.
Applications for the Legacy Fund micro-grants will be available in November of 2015.
Past funding has been distributed to a variety of local groups such as:
-
Research for Get That Freak: Homophobia and Transphobia in High Schools
-
The Queer Seniors Blogging Project
-
Rural Youth Drop-Ins
-
Community Celebrations
-
Services for LGBTQ+ individuals who are experiencing employment or housing challenges.
Past organizations to benefit from the Legacy Fund include:
-
411 Seniors Centre Society
-
Trans Alliance Society
-

It is not currently possible to make a separate donation to The Pride Legacy Fund at this time.
