TriMuskoka along with Hospice Huntsville have organized a "Sunrise Swim for Hospice" Event. The idea is that this is in keeping with the events in other communities that modelled the charitable fun run for adults that started back in the 80s with the Underpants Run in Kona. Small registration fee, with the option to raise pledge money, for a charity in the community hosting the Ironman.
We wanted to do something different and something truly Muskokan...we tossed around a "Canoe Portage", "Lifejacket Run", "Muskoka Dinner Jacket Run (plaid hunting jacket)", but none seemed as appropriate as a sunrise swim. With the plethora of lakes up here, we thought that this was appropriate.
The location and swim route is a staple route where every Wednesday and Friday morning at 6:15am our local (and any visitors are welcome) triathletes and swimmers take off for anywhere between a 1.6km and 3km swim. We all get together after at a local cafe for breakfast, and then get on with our day!
So, as the hosts of the Ironman Muskoka events, we wanted to recreate this for all of you.
We will have the Nydock coffee bar there, serving Muskoka Roastery Coffee and Totem Juice, and on land there will be a continental breakfast. Lots of local businesses are supporting this event by donating food for the buffet.
All in all, this is just great way to kick off the day, meet everyone in a relaxed environment, have a swim that is fully supported by kayaks/lifeguards/boats, with a bit of breaky afterwards. Everyone is invited, not just athletes (but you have to be 18 to participate). Only those that are registered will have access to the breakfast and coffee bar.
There is no registration fee, however, there is a minimum of $25 donation to Hospice Huntsville for the event. All donations of $25 or more will qualify for a charitable tax receipt (Canadian residents only).
Do you want to raise even more? We would love to raise as much for this fantastic charity in our community that provides end of life palliative care to Muskoka residents. Consider creating your own fundraising page, and collect pledges from your friends and family. They too will qualify for a tax receipt for any donation over $25.

Who can participate in the Sunrise Swim for Hospice?
We are welcoming everyone 18 and older to be a part of this great fundraising event.
The swim is open to IRONMAN athletes, their support crew and family members, volunteers, and local community residents who have the physical fitness to be able to swim 1.6 km on their own using whatever stroke they desire.
It is a non-competitive swim that is purely in the spirit of supporting a good cause, and getting a workout in at the same time! So come out for a swim for a great cause that will be fully supported with boats, kayaks, lifeguards and buoys to keep everyone in line!
Take a sneek peek at the swim course:
Important Safety Information
- We are going to be sending swimmers off in waves of 20 based on predicted swim pace. Each wave will be departing at one minute intervals
- We ask that you only sign up if you have the ability to swim the 1.6 km distance.
- If you know you are a swimmer that might need some extra time, supervision, or are nervous about this swim, please identify yourselves at registration and we are going to make sure that you are well taken care of by our on water swim volunteers.
- There will be ONE location to enter the water and to exit the water. We are having a "sign in and sign out system" to ensure that everyone who gets in the water, gets out of the water.
- There will be kayaks, lifeguards, and motorized support boats should participants have any medical issues out on the swim. Be smart, if you are in trouble, let our medical or on water support team know.
- We will be following standard safety procedures.... if you are in trouble, take your cap off and wave it around. One of our water support volunteers will come over to you if you are not able to get to them yourself.
- If you have any active medical concerns, please indicate them during the registration process and ensure that they are up to date at the time of the event.
