Have you ever wondered what it feels like to cross home plate in front of a cheering crowd in a Major League ballpark?
Come out to Ed Smith Stadium and "Run for the Birds" with Save Our Seabirds and the Baltimore Orioles in Sarasota. Both the 5K and the 1-mile run will begin in the parking lot of Ed Smith Stadium. And both will end by entering the outfield gate of the ballpark and running from third base to home plate.
When you cross home plate, your run is done!
All proceeds from the race will benefit Save Our Seabirds, Inc., a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization based in Sarasota.
Our mission is to rescue, rehabilitate, and release sick and injured birds while educating our community about avoiding injuries and preserving habitats.
Run For The Birds Emcee Max Winitz of ABC7 TV (obviously an animal lover!)
As a local non-profit that rescues, rehabilitates, and releases sick and injured birds of all kinds in the area, Save Our Seabirds is very mindful of sustainability. Both Save Our Seabirds and the Orioles are proud members of the Sarasota County Green Business Partnership.
This event will feature long sleeve organic cotton unisex t-shirts and unique medals made with sustainable bamboo and recycled bicycle chains.

Sustainability Initiatives
While we work to improve the lives of birds in our area at Save Our Seabirds, we cannot rectify all of the damage caused to birds by humans. Every individual has the power to make small changes in their day-to-day lives that will minimize our collective negative impact on birds. By reducing our use of single use plastics such as shopping bags, water bottles, and excessive packaging on items, we can limit the number of fatalities they cause to birds each year. When these plastics are introduced into the bird's environment, they may be accidentally ingested or can get caught somewhere on the bird, often times leading to death.
At the Run for the Birds, we will be working with and featuring both local business as well as businesses that are employing sustainable choices in their daily business practices. We are encouraging runners to carpool if possible and to bring reusable water bottles.
Understanding how to interact with birds can also help prevent injuries to them. For example, it is important to avoid feeding birds as this can lead them to become imprinted with humans. When the birds become to comfortable with humans, they can easily get injured due to being in close proximity to human activities. Aside from cats, the top causes of injuries to birds are cars, golf balls, and fishing. By limiting our interaction with wild birds, we can help to ensure that the birds stay wild.
When fishing, it is crucial to remember to never cut the line if you hook a bird. We have signs posted throughout Sarasota and Manatee counties near popular fishing locations that offer detailed information about how to de-hook a bird. If you are uncomfortable doing this yourself, you can always call Save Our Seabirds at 941-388-3010 to have a volunteer come rescue the bird or to have us talk you through the procedure.
