** Registration has been extended to September 28th **
The Harvest Half Marathon has provided the Calgary running community with a successful race over the past 15 years and we look forward to our 16th Annual event. We support local Alberta based charities and we have raised over $ 600,000.00 to help our beneficiaries’ manage their programs.
We are excited to launch our 2016 race registration and as well announce our new partnership with the Sport Injury Prevention Research Centre (SIPRC) at the University of Calgary. Our motto in this partnership is “ helping kids stay active for life”. In determining our new beneficiary we had decided on several criteria to ensure it captured the core values important to the race. They are:
· Injury prevention in all sport and recreational activities so we can all lead an active life.
· Directly related to youth and young adults
· Sports and fitness related
· Relevant to our community
We feel that the SIPRC does just that. Did you know injuries are the leading cause of death, hospitalization, and medical attention in Canadian youth? Every day in Alberta, 382 youth are taken to the emergency room, 17 are hospitalized, and every 3 days one youth dies as a result of an unintentional injury. Sport and recreation participation accounts for over 30% of this youth injury burden and health care costs are high. Injuries in youth lead to reduced participation in physical activity, increased overweight and obesity, post-traumatic osteoarthritis, and other negative health outcomes (e.g., disability, depression), increasing the burden of chronic illness. Lifelong participation in sport and recreation, including running, is a key component of healthy living. Our proposed program focuses on a critical Canadian health issue: the prevention of injury and long-term consequences of injury in youth. Together we can help raise donations and are “helping kids stay active for life”.
Our dollars raised will directly impact our youth regarding implementation and evaluation of injury prevention programs in schools and in communities. We will also support evaluation, implementation and purchase in state of the art remote and wearable technologies to enhance injury prevention and physical activity. This will lead to a significant public health impact in reducing injury in youth sport and recreation.
