Slo Pitch Kidney Classic
In Support of the Kidney Foundation of Canada
Kidney disease describes a variety of disease and disorders that affect the kidneys. Across Canada today, there is approximately 2.2 million people suffering from kidney disease, 22,000 of which are receiving dialysis.
Two special people are remembered during this year’s event. Rob Barclay lost his battle with kidney disease at age 27, on March 25, 2011. Having received his first kidney transplant while in elementary school and another kidney transplant in 2006, Rob battled the disease for many years. He is remembered as being the life of the party, an amazing friend and was best known not only for his sense of humour, but also his love of sports, baseball in particular.
On April 27th, 2014 the Camboia’s family was changed forever when Joe Camboia, father, husband, and grandfather lost his battle to kidney disease. Joe was an amazing individual and lived a life that deserved to be emulated and celebrated. He had a positive attitude in everything he did, cherished his friendships and had a sincere love for others.
Joe and Rob became good friends during their mutual battle with kidney disease and shared such positive attitudes regardless of their circumstances. Although seemingly an unlikely pair, during their many trips to dialysis these two would spend countless hours making the nurses and staff in the dialysis unit laugh, always joking and never drawing attention to their disease, only their love for life.
The reasons for hosting this tournament are simple:
1. We want to remember those that we have loved and lost - most notably Joe Camboia and Rob Barclay
2. We love that the day is built around community and being in the moment. It is a time for people to connect with friends and family, which is life's best gift.
3. We want to build awareness of kidney disease and raise funds to create a future that one day holds a cure.
As mentioned, the donations and proceeds made will be donated to the Kidney Foundation of Canada (https://www.kidney.ca/ ) a registered Canadian charitable foundation, that focuses on research, patient education services, short term financial assistance programs as well as transportation of patients to and from dialysis.
Tax receipts are available for donations over $100.
