The Wilderness Run is a challenging and scenic course in the foothills of the Piños Altos Mountain Range, outside of the Gila Wilderness, taking place primarily off-pavement, on trails and dirt roads in the Gila National Forest. The 8-mile Wilderness Run, as well as the 5-K run and 5-K walk, start and finish at the historic Parade Grounds of Fort Bayard.
The 8-mile Wilderness Run follows the same old course you’ve loved all these years: a gritty, dust-choked, coyote-scented ankle-twister in the foothills of the Gila Wilderness, with a finish over crumbling pavement on the historic Ft. Bayard Parade Grounds (before an adoring audience).
The 5-K course circles the National Cemetery and the historic Fort Bayard Golf Course.
Proceeds from this event will benefit The Ella, Michael, & Ella Scholarship Fund at Aldo Leopold Charter School.

Directions to Ft. Bayard and Parade Grounds
Directions from Silver City: Take US 180 East for approximately 5 miles. Turn left just before reaching the town of Santa Clara & follow the Ft. Bayard historic signage until you arrive at the parade grounds. Note that the old hospital was demolished last spring, so we are planning to start & finish near Officers Row again this year.
For greatest convenience, park in the lot situated at the corner of Calle El Centro & Camino del Viento (near the quonset hut). See you there!
