Every Stride Empowers
Every year thousands of women play an integral role - the role of empowerment. The power given to someone to act. To do something.
The Scotiabank Women Against Breast Cancer 5k empowers women, helping them to become stronger and more confident, especially in controlling one's life, given the circumstances.
The race started in 1999. Nineteen years ago.
It began with 300 women running to raise funds for free breast cancer screening at Regional Health Centres nationwide. Often when we are part of something, we may not understand the impact that our single action has, or the potential that the collective has to create a meaningful difference. How amazing is it that almost two decades later over 6,000 women gather together with family and friends, empowered – committed – because they choose to participate in this hallmark initiative for the cause.
To date over 17,000 women have benefited from the program, and last year, proceeds from the race were donated to The Trinidad and Tobago Cancer Society to conduct breast cancer screenings and awareness campaigns in rural communities in Tobago.
As we look forward to this year’s event, with the theme ‘Every Stride Empowers’, we ask that you continue to support either through your participation and/ or donations, empowering thousands of women throughout the country.
As Kofi Annan once said, "there is no tool greater for development than the empowerment of women."
This year we also partnered with a local artiste, Brianna McCarthy, whose work encapsulates the power and diversity of women. She created the artwork which was used for the design of our limited edition T-Shirt, which will be available for sale, as well as other Scotiabank Women Against Breast Cancer 5k Swag (Mason Jars, Tees, Vest, Visors & Laces). Part of the proceeds from the sale of these items will go to the beneficiary, as well as other initiatives that help bring awareness to the cause.
Even if you do not wish to run you can still:
- Sponsor a runner
- Purchase a t-shirt, mason jar, shoe laces, visor or tote bag
- Make a donation
