Imagine living on $300 a year!! That is the definition of "extreme poverty" that Nuru International is tackling every day! Nuru is a non-profit organization with a multi-faceted approach to attacking the struggles people have living in extreme poverty. Can you even wrap your mind around such a struggle to survive?
The Nuru Walk for Water sponsored by the Bridgeport Juniors will begin at 1:30 PM. on September 10th, 2017. This event is a unique one in that walkers won’t just be walking to raise money for Nuru. During the walk, the participants will carry water collection buckets on their heads – actually carrying water in a style similar to that of women and children who reside in Kenya, Ethiopia and other impoverished countries. Participants will be walking a mile in the shoes of so many impoverished.
It’s not unusual for those women and children to spend an entire day walking several miles to bring water back to their families. Many times, that water isn’t even clean. Because carrying water fills up their days, there is rarely opportunity for the young people of these extremely poor communities to attend school. Nuru, founded by native West Virginian Jake Harriman, is a 501(c)3 organization building the world's first self-sustaining, self-scaling, integrated development model to end extreme poverty.
The walk will start at the Benedum Civic Center on Main Street in Bridgeport, WV. Your AMAZING self will walk carrying 5 gallon orange buckets donated by Home Depot. The Nuru Walk for Water will be approximately a mile trek…allowing participants the experience of walking a mile in their shoes. We will walk along the sidewalk on Main Street past Oliverio's Restaurant and continuing to The Chiropractic Care Center. We will then fill our buckets with as much water as you want, and then walk back down Main street to finsih where we started at the Benedum Civic Center.
When people are living on less than $300 per year, every $20 registration, donation or sponsorship we receive truly makes a difference!! All proceeds will go directly to Nuru International.
We are going to ROCK THIS!!
