You MUST attend your race brief to race! It will have lots of great information about the rules of triathlon and the specifics of our course. Give yourself plenty of time to find parking! Don’t worry about bringing all your gear to registration, register first, then go grab all your stuff and set up camp in transition (more about that below)
PARKING - Your best bet is the arena parking lot which is on the other side of the gym. Keep in mind that the run course is going to be on the flyer trail. Hopefully parking isn't going to be TOO bad due to the rolling nature of the swim waves. That being said, give yourself plenty of time so you're not adding extra pressure to yourself the morning of.
Here's a link to the map of the area parking lot- https://goo.gl/maps/CELvyHdsrNU2
The weather for Sunday morning looks cool, but don’t let that fool you. Remember to wear sunscreen! As this is a pool start triathlon, wetsuits/compression sleeves are not allowed for the swim. Glass bottles and headphones are not allowed for any part of the triathlon/duathlon. Once you finish at registration, you can bring your bike and accessories to the transition zone. Be aware that you will be required to wear your race number during the bike and run of the race. If you’re putting on a t-shirt after the swim you may want to pin this to your shirt before getting your transition zone ready. Your bike will be checked for caps on handlebars and you will be asked to put on your helmet and fasten it to ensure proper fit. Walk through transition before you race, it’s going to be confusing and your heart rate is going to be up so take a calm walk through and see where you go in off the swim, exit with your bike, enter with your bike and run out. Find a way to remember where you parked your bike. Once you rack your bike, you can set up your shoes and anything you will need for the bike portion and run portion. Make sure your bike is in an appropriate gear; you’re going to head up the hill first so don’t be in a huge gear. Your space for equipment is the width of your handlebars and only the equipment you will need can remain. Bags and extra equipment will be removed. As it may be cool when you start the bike portion, you can wear a jacket if necessary but it must remain with you throughout the ride. Basically, anything you leave transition with, comes back with you. Your helmet is to be fastened before you remove your bike from the rack to start the bike portion and remains on until you rack your bike when you finish. Then off to the run, remembering to take off bike helmet. Your legs WILL hurt and feel funny after the bike, small steps are your friend until you find your legs. You can walk or run but not crawl. For the bike and run portion of the race, bare torso is not allowed. Below is the link to the International Triathlon Union Competition rules for your perusal.

Race Route Details
We will be using a different format for the race compared to previous years with route changes for all three disciplines.
The swim portion of the course will be conducted as a pool swim. We are changing the event from heats to a rolling start with a new competitor entering the pool on a 1:00 interval rotating through the lanes.
The bike will be a road course with limited exposure on public roads. There will be multiple loops of the course with the number depending on which distance you are competing in. Due to the rolling start and slightly shorter loops than previous years there will be greater rider density on the course than previous years.
The run course will be will be an out and back on the Shearwater flyers trail.
To handle the larger number of competitors who will require being setup at one time, transition will be enlarged and moved across the road to the parking lot in front of the Shearwater Gym.
Changes to the route are unavoidable. We have made every attempt to make the event safe, enjoyable, and competitive for everyone.

Swim Mechanics
A rolling start will be used for the swim portion of the race again this year. Time ranges (TBD) will be assigned prior to race day once registration closes. Briefing times will also be assigned. You must be registered, marked, chipped and setup in time for your briefing. Briefings will be scheduled several times through the day and you will attend the briefing prior to your race time.
Racers will enter the pool area through the locker rooms. Five minutes before your start time you will be allowed to enter the warmup lane at one end of the pool to take a lap. You will then exit the pool and proceed to your assigned lane. You will enter your lane (keeping out of the way of swimmers already swimming in that lane) and start at your specified time at the direction of the pool starter and timer.
Swimmers will start at a 1m 30s interval. Swimmers will start in the next lane down the pool. Swimming will be done in a loop fashion within the lane. The loop direction will be determined by the lane supervisor. Passing safely is the responsibility of the swimmer passing. The mechanics of the loop swimming should match a typical open lane swim at a pool.
Example,
Swimmer one in lane one at 08:30.00.
Swimmer two starts in lane two at 08:11.30.
Swimmer three, four, five all in their own lanes at 08:33.00, 08:34.30, and 08:36.00 respectively.
Swimmer six enters lane one and joins swimmer one swimming clockwise in that lane at 08:37.30
Swimmer seven joins swimmer two in lane two at 08:39.00
Swimmer eight, nine, ten all join at 08:40.30, 08:42.00, and 08:43.30 respectively.
Swimmer eleven joins swimmer one and six in lane one at 08:45.00.
Exiting the pool will be through the glass door to the Shearwater Gym lobby. Racers will proceed right, down the hallway, out the side door, and across the driveway to the new transition location.
Tri a tri people will go first followed by the Sprint distance swimmers with peopel with the fastest swim times going sequentially later.
Spectators will not be allowed in the viewing area for safety concerns of competitors exiting the pool area to transition.
Bike Route
The bike route this year is similar to last, with the main difference being, we will not be going out on Hynes Rd. and it will be almost a closed course. I say almost as there will still be minimal traffic.
Leaving the transition zone, staying to the right, you will bike up Boundary Rd and take your first right on Warrior Ave.. Riding along Warrior Ave., you will then serpentine the switchbacks of Shearwater Mountain (not a real mountain). Turn left on Bonaventure St., left on Puncher Ave. then right on Boundary up to Magnificent Ave. and take a right. You will follow along Magnificent Ave all the way to the end, follow it around to the right onto Wilson Dr. where there is a 180’ turn around. You will then follow Magnificent Ave. to the other end of the street where you will find another 180’ turn around bringing you back to a right on Boundary Ave.. Riding down hill on Boundary Ave. controlling your speed you will make a left turn on Warrior Ave, where you will merge with those coming from the transition. This completes your first loop. The Try a Try will complete 2 loops and the Sprint will complete 4. On your last loop (you must count your own loops) you will continue straight down Boundary Ave. to the dismount line at the transition zone.
Run Route
The run route will held along the Shearwaters Flyer's trail. It will consist of 2 loops of the 2.5 km run for a total of 5km for the sprint distance and one loop or 2.5 km for the tri a tri
The Duathlon will start with a 2.5km run then 20km bike followed by the 5 km run.
Frequently Asked Questions
Registration price does not include applicable taxes and online processing fees.
Will I be able to try out the course in advance?
Not in it's entirety. The Pool portion is an active pool with it's own swim schedule. The bike course is not accessible as it is partially run through private 12 Wing Shearwater roads. The run is generally accessible on the trail.
What time do I need to arrive for registration?
Registration times will be announced closer to the event date.
What time is my start?
Start times, based on your predicted swim time, will be emailed to your registration email a day or so after registration closes.
What time is race kit pickup?
Race kit pickup is part of registration the day of the race. Please do not arrive at the registration desk more than two hours before your heat as it can cause a bottleneck at registration. Note T-shirts are not offered this year.
I would like to sign up for the race on race day.
No. In order to setup the starts to run as quickly as possible we can not include race day registration.
Registration is closed and it is still before the deadline for registration, why can't I still register?
Registration may be closed early due to the race selling out prior to the deadline. We will be enforcing a cut off on the triathlon events, the Duathlon is often available due to there being no bottleneck on pool time on race day.
There are no more Sprint Triathlon spots, but there are still Try-A-Tri spots. Can I still do the Sprint?
The maximum of registrants for those two events may be shuffled as needed up to a maximum between the two. That number represents the maximum number of people we can run in the allocated amount of time for the day.
I'm traveling to the race with someone, can we be in the same heat?
Maybe. In previous years we tried to group racers for easier travel. With the new start procedure the day should be shorter by several hours. Due to this we will be attempting to not adjust start times artificially and will be using swim times exclusively.
Is there a Team Event?
Yes! We are offering a team Sprint Triathlon relay.
Is there a Kids Event?
Yes! The Kids Triathlon is open to children ages 7 to 12. Participants must be able to swim 100m without a flotation device.
Is there a Draft Legal race?
We are offering a Draft Legal Sprint Triathlon, open to 12 men and 12 women due to space in the pool.
I can't make it to the race, do you need volunteers?
Yes, please contact us via email and we'll get you on the volunteer list.
Are there showers available?
There are! Showers, lockers, and washrooms are available in the Shearwater gym facility
How will passing work in the pool?
Tap the foot of the person in front of you gently, continue swimming behind them until you get to the end of the lane. The person who was tapped will then yield to the faster swimmer. We have attempted to setup the pool timing to minimize the interference from passing. This is why it is important to provide your expected swim time.
Do I need to be a Triathlon Nova Scotia member to enter the Trident's Triathlon and Duathlon?
You have to have a TriNS membership to race, it's part of our race sanctioning and insurance. You can get a one day or a year membership. They should both be available through the Race Roster page during race registration by checking the "I'd like to purchase a membership" box.
