WHAT IS THIS CRAZY RACE?
24 HOURS OF SHALE "HELL" DIVISION (MOC, INDIVIDUAL ADULT, YOUTH, MASTERS, & JOURNEYMAN):
Take your love of adventure racing and combine it with the most intense 10K Obstacle Course in America and you'll find yourself at SHALE "HELL" for the next 24 hours! Each lap is over 6 miles long and you'll navigate through 70+ obstacles along the way. Our never ending loops of obstacle madness will have you crying for more walls, ropes, ladders, poles, drags, carries, water traverse, the GREAT WALL and the infamous TARZAN SWINGS (just to name a few) only to have your last ounce of energy zapped at the Anaconda!
The first (1st) hour of the 24 Hour Race "ONLY" will be done obstacle free. After an hour into the race, an airhorn will sound and you will then start completing obstacles on the course from there on out. If you fail an obstacle, you can retry as many times as you like until you are successful...or...only after you have "failed" the obstacle then you can perform the penalty designated. "Skipping" an obstacle (or doing a "Tough n' Go") and taking the penalty in lieu of trying it is considered cheating and will not be tolerated. If you are caught skipping obstacles, you are no longer eligible for prize winnings and will be automatically be put in the journeyman division. Subsequent laps will have different penalties and will be announced on race day. You will be required to mark down on a chart/wipe board your time-in, lap count & time-out before you go out on your next lap.
MOC DIVISION: Take your elite game to the next level and sign up for 24 Hours of MOC HELL (MOC - Mandatory Obstacle Completion). Race for 24 hours and you are REQUIRED to complete each obstacle successfully. You can take all the attempts and time you want to complete the obstacle, but once you fail and can no longer go on, you're out. You have the option of DNF for the MOC division, or move over to the Open Adult Division and keep racing. In 2017 we had 2 participants and they very respectfully completed 5 laps and 3 laps without failing any obstacles!!! Absolutely amazing!
** OVERNIGHT TENT CAMPING & INSURANCE IS INCLUDED in your entry for Friday and Saturday nights!
8 HOUR DIVISION (INDIVIDUAL, YOUTH, MASTERS & JOURNEYMAN):
This division is run as an individual and you will have 8 hours to complete as many laps as you can on the 10K course. This is just like our 8 Hr. Polar Bear Challenge in February each year, but without the snow!!! Failed obstacles require that you perform the designated penalty for that obstacle before you can move on to the next one. "Skipping" an obstacle (or doing a "Tough n' Go") and taking the penalty in lieu of trying it is considered cheating and will not be tolerated. If you are caught skipping obstacles, you are no longer eligible for prize winnings and will be automatically be put in the journeyman division. You will be required to mark down on a chart/wipe board your time-in, lap count & time-out before you go out on your next lap. CREWING for a 24 Hour participant is "INCLUDED" in your registration.
** OVERNIGHT TENT CAMPING & SUPPORT CREW FOR A 24 HR. COMPETITOR IS INCLUDED in your entry for Friday and Saturday nights! Individual racer insurance is required for an additional $10.00.
10K SINGLE LAP DIVISION (INDIVIDUAL, YOUTH, MASTERS & JOURNEYMAN):
Enjoy the great energy of the weekend and join us for single lap options on our 10K obstacle course!! Open to Individuals, Youth, and Masters all with the Journeyman option. This fast paced sprint race will have you hungry for more and you'll be back to compete in our longer format races in no time ;-) Designated penalties for failed obstacles are required at the obstacle you fail. You may repeat the obstacle as many times as you like until success or failure, but if you failed it, you must perform the penalty for it. "Skipping" an obstacle (or doing a "Tough n' Go") and taking the penalty in lieu of trying it is considered cheating and will not be tolerated. If you are caught skipping obstacles, you are no longer eligible for prize winnings and will be automatically be put in the journeyman division.
** OVERNIGHT TENT CAMPING & SUPPORT CREW FOR A 24 HR. COMPETITOR IS INCLUDED in your entry for Friday and Saturday nights! Individual racer insurance is required for an additional $10.00.
CREW REGISTRATION:
To have a crew member support you, they must register as a SUPPORT CREW member. This entitles them access to the Shale Hill obstacle course for the duration of their stay, camping, access to facilities for porto-johns, cooking/grills and insurance. Included it their preregistration entry is a FREE Shale Hill t-shirt!!! The cost is $60 per person. Option: They can also enter in the 8 Hour or Single Lap 10K Divisions and be automatically eligible to support crew for you. See information listed above in those race descriptions.
** JOURNEYMAN OPTION for ALL divisions:
Sign up for the JOURNEYMAN option to forego penalties at failed obstacles. However, you are still required to attempt every obstacle on the course. This designation exempts you from performing penalties on failed obstacles, and you will be ineligible for prizes. So, come run the course without the pressure of completing all the obstacles and have a great time taking a more relaxed approach to competing at Shale Hill :-) Custom finisher's medal, custom T-shirt, camping and crewing included in your entry!!!
CAMPING:
2 nights included for 24 Hours of HELL - Overnight camping is included in your 24 Hour registration for BOTH Friday and Saturday nights.
2 nights included for 8 Hours of MINI HELL - Overnight camping is included in your 8 Hour registration for BOTH Friday and Saturday nights. Also included is CREW SUPPORT for a 24 Hour competitor. Additional participant insurance of $10 required.

EMT/MEDIC SUPPORT:
The event will be staffed with a full-time medic/EMT on premises for the duration of the race. Local Benson/Fair Haven FIRST RESPONSE is on-call for the event.
WHAT DO I BRING?
1) BRING A SUPPORT CREW PERSON for the 24 Hour Race :-) You should have a support crew member available to help you through the event. And, your crew members will need to register for $60 to cover their insurance, course access, and camping.
2) CAMPING INCLUDED for all registered race participants Friday & Saturday nights - BRING A TENT & WHATEVER YOU NEED TO BE COMFORTABLE FOR AN OVER-NIGHT'S STAY OUTDOORS (tent, canopy, folding chairs, cot, SUNSCREEN & BUG SPRAY, coolers, ice, lanterns, flash lights, head lamps, batteries, sleeping bag, your favorite blankie/stuffed animal, pillow, etc.).
3) FOOD - This is a SELF-SUPPORTED race!! You will need to bring your own food and hydration for refueling between laps. We will provide water & bananas throughout the duration of the race. There will be "no food vendor" on premises, but we have a general store (BENSON VILLAGE STORE), the WEST COAST TACO STAND near the 3 mile mark, and a full-service family style restaurant (THE WHEEL INN) within 1/4 mile of Shale Hill. There are 5 water stations throughout the course. Bring cash to pay for tacos!!
4) CLOTHING - July in Vermont can be lovely with temperatures ranging in the "buggy 90's & 80's" to down-right chilly with a cold rain in the middle of summer!! Plan on bringing multiple changes of clothing for running in hot weather to chilly and raining. HEAD LAMPS are mandatory for night running and be sure to stock up on batteries! Hydration packs are a great idea, but keep in mind to wear appropriate clothing to prevent chafing. BODY GLIDE or athletic cremes are highly suggested for those sensitive areas prone to chafing. There were several people last year who rubbed themselves raw with wet sweaty accessories on bare skin....ICK and OUCH! So, stock up on Neosporin, bandaids, second skin, vet-wrap, sunscreen, bug spray, etc. You are running in the woods/fields...check for TICKS!
5) FOOTWEAR - BEWARE of the dreaded TRENCH FOOT!!! It is not recommended that you wear the same pair of shoes and socks for 24 hours. Bring as many changes of shoes and twice as many pairs of high quality socks designed just for this purpose. Cotton is the kiss-of-death and will hold water and sweat and then cause terrible blisters after hours and hours of running. Between laps you should air your feet out!! And change into a clean pair of socks after every lap at the very least!!! As Lieutenant Dan said to Forrest Gump & Bubba, "There is one item of G.I. gear that can be the difference between a live grunt and a dead grunt. SOCKS, cushion, sole, O.D. green." I want you boys to remember to change your socks wherever we stop!" There are also some great foot cremes on the market for long distance running to help cut down on friction. "Trail Toes" is one of our product sponsors and we recommend you check them out and purchase some before the race :-)
6) ALL FOR ONE AND ONE FOR ALL! You are all here competing as individuals, but support each other as only a good team member should. Look out for each other and notify race staff of any problems with obstacles or injuries sustained by others on the course.
7) WEATHER - Shale Hill staff reserves the right to place a "hold" on racing should the weather conditions prevent you from competing safely. In years past we've encountered rain/lightening and intense fog in the late night/early morning hours making it impossible to see more than a few feet in front of you. A temporary hold was put on course for a couple of hours to prevent participants from getting lost and our ability to safely locate you.
8) NO DOGS or pets of any kind....this includes un-tame children and spousal units ;-) We have dogs (Max and Shale), we love dogs, but for liability reasons and the comfort of all our neighbors, please leave them at home!
9) PARKING - parking is accessible at 257 Lake Road. PLEASE DO NOT PARK, even if temporarily, via the barn/gym entrance. This is in violation of our permit with the town of Benson and all race participants, volunteers and spectators MUST park in field coming off our driveway. Any cars you see at the barn/gym are for EMT, vendor deliveries, apt. tenants, select staff and owners of Shale Hill only.
Feel free to send us questions via email at shalehilladventure@aol.com or call (802)537-3561.
See you in HELL!!

WHAT HAPPENS IF THE EVENT IS CANCELLED??
* We do our best to make sure the event runs rain or shine, but sometimes mother nature does not allow for safe racing conditions. If we cannot honor a new date, then a percentage of your registration fee will be refunded after race expenses are covered. If you cannot attend the rescheduled event date, then you can transfer your entry to another person or defer to a future race for a $25 fee.

Please sign up under the volunteer section of this page to volunteer! Go to the top left menu of this page and select "Volunteer" :-)
Volunteers are the backbone of a successful race here at Shale Hill and we cannot thank you enough for your time and effort :-)
