Generations of locals have used Woodlawn Cemetery as a place to lay their loved ones to rest. The multiple roads of the cemetery are also used by runners, walkers, and fitness enthusiasts who enjoy the beauty (and shade) of the historic site. The first annual Woodlawn Cemetery Chapel Chase will allow runners and walkers of all ability levels to participate in a 5k race through the the cemetery while raising money for the restoration of the historic chapel.
Built in 1909 and dedicated the following year, the chapel at Woodlawn Cemetery was built with the generosity of Mary Clark Thompson and was in use for fifty years. Following a decline of use, the chapel doors were closed and heat turned off, leading to a slow decline in the historic building. The effort to restore the chapel has been underway for several years, and the funds from this event will go towards the cost of restoration of this beautiful chapel.
