My Story…

The last thing we can take from a person is choice: street sex workers have run out of choices. WISH tries to give them back some of the choices that every one of us enjoys. We tend to think of ourselves as "us" and the people of the DTES as "them". With a few bad choices, wrong turns, or bad luck "us" could easily be "them". Blaise Pascal said that our lives, even our existence, are the consequence of "an infinity of chances" and that we, the "us" "...have nothing naturally superior to them". I think Pascal was right. Two years ago my younger brother died of a fentanyl overdose. We had the same parents, the same family, the same neighbourhood, the same schools, the same opportunities. So why him and not me? Chance and choice, in my book. A few bad choices or a few wrong turns and I could have been him. So I run to give these women back some choices. (And I love that the most sage advice offered so far by one of my supporters is "don't wreck yourself Doug".)

Description

WISH Drop-In Centre Society puts its mission, values, and core principles into action by providing services, supports and opportunities to women engaged in Vancouver’s street based sex industry. WISH offers a safe haven for sex-working women: a place to take a break, connect with colleagues and friends, get a bite to eat or access other, more specific kinds of support – in a safe, respectful, accepting environment. As a deeply respected member of the DTES community, WISH offers programs to serve immediate needs, while engaging in the ongoing advocacy required to shift societal prejudices that continue to put women at risk.
