Divas Speaker Series Panel Discussion #2:
Hosted at BlackToe Running, the second panel in our series will address being a woman in competition. We have three extraordinary women who will share their experiences and hope for the direction of women in the competitive running space. Each will bring a unique perspective of competition through the past 4 decades.
Jacqueline Gareau, who was the first place finisher in the 1980 Boston Marathon, and was caught up in spectacle after having her win initially usurped by a woman who cheated her way across the finish line.
Krista Duchene came 3rd in the Boston Marathon in 2018, holds the title as second fastest Canadian and made an appearance at the 2016 Olympics. Krista has been dubbed the Marathon Mom after winning the Mississauga marathon, her first marathon after giving birth. She is a registered dietitian and mom to 3 very proud kids.
Micha Powell who only started her competitive track career in her senior year of high school, is the indoor and outdoor record holder for the 400m at the University of Maryland and was named Second Team NCAA All-American for her 2016 indoor season. Micha was also on the Canadian Olympic Track Team for the 4x400m relay in 2016.
The event will be moderated by actor, producer, director, journalist and Olympic runner, Rosey Edeh.
About the Divas Speaker Series: The Divas Speaker Series is designed to create a space for women to have uncomfortable yet critical discussions about women in sport. Issues of race, gender and sexuality have continuously permeated how we, as women, engage in sport along with factors such as physiology, biology and psychology. While we may see these issues addressed in the media and literature, we want to create a safe forum for women to be open and honest about these matters in a way that has been previously ignored. Through uncomfortable dialogue we want to create an avenue of progress and a network of women that will lift each other up.
