Artists Working in Education
ABOUT AWE
Artists Working in Education, Inc. (AWE), is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that sponsors professional artists to nurture the imaginations of Milwaukee youth by bringing creative visual arts experiences directly to schools, community centers and informal settings such as parks, playgrounds, libraries and community events.
AWE artists guide children through the process of transforming the ordinary into the extraordinary. Meaningful arts programming helps youth develop new ways of seeing the world, enhanced inquisitiveness, creativity, flexibility, imagination and confidence.
History
1997 Artist Barbara Manger started AWE. The idea first came to her on a cross-country bike ride while she was contemplating public cuts to arts education at the state and local levels. She gathered a group of Milwaukee area artists, art educators, and museum curators to initiate four artist-in-residence programs that paired professional artists with school groups.
1998 the organization became a 501(c)3.
1999 Artist Sally Duback began the Truck Studio program with a donated van, and a vision to bring art to young people in the parks.
2002 AWE won the Governor’s Award for Excellence. The Truck Studio program grew over the years to include a fleet of four, brightly painted vans filled with art supplies and staffed by a team of artists, art educators, college level interns, and MPS interns.
2012 AWE’s budget grew by 22% and the organizations reach grew by 55% with the addition of year round Truck Studio programs in partnership with Milwaukee Public Library, and community based artist-in-residence programs during the summer months.
2014-2015 AWE engaged in strategic planning to identify organizational priorities, and led to a neighborhood focus for implementing our programs.
2016 AWE began implementing the 5×3 Artist-in-Residence program in the Clarke Square, Harambee, LBWN, Lindsey Heights, and Washington Park Neighborhoods. This program provides youth the opportunity to create public art that addresses social justice issues that matter to them.
Our Approach to Art Education
• THE ARTS ARE AN ESSENTIAL PART OF OUR HUMANITY. All youth in Milwaukee should have equitable access to the arts. AWE is a venue for youth to experiment with new art supplies, gain skills in visual art concepts, and participate in open ended activities to develop one’s imagination.
• ARTISTS ARE VALUABLE MENTORS WHO HELP US TO ENVISION OURSELVES AND OUR COMMUNITIES IN NEW WAYS. AWE works with artists who are skilled at guiding youth through the creative process. They create opportunities for the expression of youth voice, and the socio-emotional growth that is inherent in engaging in the arts. Artists are mentored and supported in their work, and are paid competitive wages that value their profession.
• SAFE, SUPPORTIVE SPACES ARE NECESSARY FOR HEALTHY COMMUNITIES. Artists are trained to encourage healthy relationship building, promote learning, and provide encouraging feedback to youth. Social connections between peers and neighborhoods are encouraged and strengthened. Youth are active participants in each project. Opportunities are given for youth to make choices, to take creative risks, participate in planning, and articulate what they have learned throughout the creative process.
• THE YOUTH, NEIGHBORHOODS, AND PARTNERS WE WORK WITH HAVE SELF-DETERMINATION. Each program is unique, and is developed in collaboration with partners to identify mutual goals.
WORKING WITH AWE
AWE is a dynamic nonprofit organization who seeks exceptional candidates with an interest in utilizing their unique talents to support our mission. Our staff, artists, and educators are collaborative, action-oriented, and believe in the potential of youth and Milwaukee neighborhoods. We learn, work, create, and take risks together to push the boundaries of what is possible for youth in Milwaukee.
