Saskatoon’s Courtney Hufsmith has had a year to remember. While finishing her 3rd year at the University of Saskatchewan she competed at the Usports National Championships and finished 3rd in the 3000m, and 2nd in the 1500m. During this season she also set the Huskie and Saskatchewan indoor records in the 3000m (9:08.47) and the 1500m (4:18.66).
On May 14, Courtney was sent an email letting her know that she had qualified for her first Team Canada, and would be competing at the Summer Universiade (FISU) (World University Championships) in Naples, Italy. The FISU championship features 118 nations, 6000 athletes in 18 different sports.
On June 11 Courtney competed in the heats of the 1500m, where she placed a strategic 7th place (4:21.38) which advanced her into the final. On June 13 she lined up for the final beside fellow Canadian, Lucia Stafford. After all was said and done, Courtney ran her heart out and finished with the Bronze medal in a new personal best and Saskatchewan record of 4:11.81. This was one of 6 total medals that Canada won during the games (the 3rd medal for Track and Field).
Come out on Thursday August 29 and hear the story of how Courtney was able to find the devastating kick that brought her home with a bronze medal, and how she refocuses and sets her sights on Tokyo 2020.
