About EHS Science Travel-Based Learning:
Each summer, a group of students travel abroad to perform conservation research in an underdeveloped country.
Next summer in 2020, the expedition will be to the Indonesian island of Borneo. Students will visit an orangutan sanctuary and a local village. Students will spend a week camping in the rainforest while performing research, followed by a week learning marine biology on the ocean. During the expedition, students will be helping scientists inventory species both in the rainforest and in the ocean, quantify the carrying capacity for orangutans in the rainforest and study coral reefs. The goal is to help identify the fauna of Borneo forests and to help establish standardized monitoring protocol that can identify any changes in over time. The goal is to help the government develop ecotourism to help the local economy, quantify carbon quantity in the forests to receive carbon credits and prevent forest destruction.
