Charles H. Martin, Jr. (September 1, 1965)
Charles was a local dairy farmer, World War II veteran, civic leader and volunteer firefighter with Lionville Fire Company. On September 1, 1965, while fighting a brush fire at Whispering Pines Farm, off Whitford Road, Charles came in contact with a fence that had a 44,000 volt power line fall on top of it, and was electrocuted. He was 39 years old at the time of his death. Charles was survived by his wife, Nancy, and their 3 children: Nancy, Charles and Dennis.
Jonathan S. Windle, Jr. (November 1, 1966)
Jonathan was a planning engineer for Boeing Vertol, World War II veteran, and a volunteer firefighter with Lionville Fire Company. On November 1, 1966, while helping with the construction of the new fire house, Jonathan fell from a ladder and suffered a fatal skull fracture. He was 39 years old at the time of his death. Jonathan was survived by his wife, Verda, and their two children: Russell and Darlene.
David J. Good (March 9, 1998)
Dave was an employee with Uwchlan Township, as well as a volunteer firefighter with Lionville Fire Company. On March 9, 1998, while tending to an accident victim on the Pennsylvania Turnpike, a tractor trailer lost control and crashed into the accident scene. Dave was killed and 10 others injured (full story below). He was 38 years old at the time of his death. Dave was survived by his wife, Mary Ann, and 2 sons: Jon and Jason.
The 1998 Pennsylvania Turnpike Crash
On a rainy afternoon, March 9th, 1998, the Lionville Fire Company and Uwchlan Ambulance were dispatched to a single vehicle accident, at mile post 310.9 Westbound, on the Pennsylvania Turnpike. While Firefighters and EMTs were attending to the victim, a tractor-trailer lost control and crashed into the Assistant Chief's vehicle, overturned, and slid into the back of the ambulance, as well as other emergency responders in that area.
In the aftermath, tragically, Firefighter David J. Good lost his life. Assistant Chief Steve Senn and Firefighter Robert Doan were trapped inside the Assistant Chief's vehicle and required extrication, using the Jaws of Life. Lionville Fire Company Firefighters Mike Cox, Chris Good, Pete Harmansky, Eric John, and James Rattrie, along with Uwchlan Ambulance EMTs Brent Kaplan and John Wanczyk, were injured at the scene.
Although the events of this day have been difficult for the Lionville Fire Company, Uwchlan Ambulance, and our community, it helped lead to the introduction of such highway safety measures as traffic incident management training, standards and regulations, emergency vehicle placement at incident scenes, high-visibility chevrons on fire apparatus, advance warning signs, high visibility vests, and "Move Over" laws nationwide. These subsequent safety initiatives have saved countless lives for both emergency responders and highway road workers.
