Harris County Hospital District Foundation is proud to announce its 18th Annual TexasMedRun on Saturday, February 8, 2020! Our event is USA Track and Field certified and sanctioned, and will be held in the Texas Medical Center. The funds raised will benefit Harris Health System, Ambulatory Care Services, Peritoneal Dialysis Mobile Health Program! 

So, what is Peritoneal Dialysis? Peritoneal Dialysis (PD) is special dialysis treatment for patients with kidney failure that occurs inside the body using the peritoneal membrane as a filter. The membrane surrounds your intestines, bowel and other organs. It has many holes that can be used to strain waste products and other chemicals from your blood. 

Currently, Harris Health System provides PD to twenty (20) patients in their home environment, thus representing less than 10% of all Harris Health patients on dialysis.   

Supporting the national goal of shifting patients to home-based dialysis to 80% by 2025, Harris Health System would like to dramatically expand this PD program and provide the added benefits of lower costs, greater lifestyle flexibility autonomy, less restrictive diets, and longer lasting residual kidney function for these patients.

The Peritoneal Dialysis Mobile Health Program aim is to transform its current care delivery model to increase healthcare accessibility and improve health outcomes.   Mobile health clinics have become common tools for health systems working to reach their otherwise unreachable patient population. This mobile health clinic will be configured for the patients’ needs and will travel directly to and care for patients who would have otherwise gone without care.

The Harris County Hospital District Foundation strives to raise needed funds to help make healthcare more widely accessible, especially in areas where there are barriers to these services. It is our goal to raise $100,000.00 to purchase a new state of the art mobile health clinic to meet these patients’ needs.
