Covid-19 Update:
It is with a heavy heart we have officially cancelled the 2020 Oregon Wine County Half Marathon. While our state works to create guidelines for public health and safety with an eye to resuming daily life, it has been made clear that large gatherings including sporting events, festivals and fairs, will not resume by September in time for our event to take place. The safety of our athletes, volunteers, partners, and small communities that host us are our top priority and we believe that this is the best decision given the circumstances. We want to bring everyone together again in September 2021, and sadly that means not coming together in September 2020. Registered runners can choose to defer their full entry to 2021, donate all of part of their entry fee to select charities, or request a full refund by June 30th. An email was sent to runners with further instructions on May 20th. If you did not receive that email, please contact us at owchm@sportoregon.org.
For general information about this event, continue reading! This is an annual event that will return in September 2021.
Run & Raise a Glass With Us
at the Oregon Wine Country Half Marathon!
Meet Oregon’s Wine Country. People around the world have fallen in love with its premier pinot noir, and once you’re here it’s hard not to fall in love with the place too. Here you’ll find that communities are tight-knit, talented, and creative. While the country roads are quiet, the sweeping vistas, pods of old growth forest, and surrounding mountains standing tall speak volumes, especially in the early morning glow. Lush vineyards and charming farms are tended by families old and new who still take a handcrafted approach to growing the best grapes and freshest foods, and challenge themselves to do it a little differently, just as Oregonians always have.
The Oregon Wine Country Half Marathon is a celebration of the spirit here- that spirit of community, craft, exploration, and of course, the World’s Best Pinot Noir. So, whether it’s the place you love to call home or a place you’d love to get to know, come raise a glass with us to Oregon Wine Country.
The point to point 13.1 mile course from Dundee Hills to Downtown Carlton provides a stunning tour of this world renown region. The 2-Person Relay follows the same stunning course, but split the distance with a pal and get to wine sipping sooner. The 5K run and walk is a fun and flat out-and-back course starting and finishing in charming downtown Carlton. All three race varietals end with a warm celebration at the Finish Line Wine and Music Festival presented by Ken Wright Cellars and featuring 20+ local winemakers!
All race prices (except the Under-21 5K) include technical race shirt, finisher's medal, wine glass + entry into the Wine and Music Festival!
Under 21? Jump into the 5k for just $15! Race shirt, wine glass, and wine tastings not included. Discount automatically applied to online registration. Youth of all ages welcome!
Yamhill Country residents receive $10 off the individual half marathon entry. To activate the discount, simply enter your zip code into the Promo Code Box on the registration page. Zip code entered must match zip code used in the participant's mailing/billing address to receive the discount.
The Oregon Sports Authority is committed to providing affordable race registration options to all runners. We encourage you to contact us by email at OWCHM@sportoregon.org if the entry fee is cost prohibitive under your current circumstances. The Course
Half Marathon and 2-Person Relay Course
7:00am start at Stoller Family Estate
From your first glimpse of the starting line, illuminated by a golden sunrise over Mt. Hood, to your first delicious sip of fine wine after the finish line, you’ll find the Oregon Wine Country Half is something special. Sometimes the best things in life are off the beaten path. The scenic point-to-point course explores the heart of the Willamette Valley in Yamhill County, winding past a cluster of four American Viticulture Areas (Dundee Hills, Yamhill-Carlton, Chehalem Mountains, and Ribbon Ridge). The race starts at Stoller Family Estate, a picturesque hill-top vineyard perched above the towns of Lafayette and Dundee and featuring Mt. Hood views. Beyond Stoller, the course takes quiet paved country roads lined with vineyards and orchards, farm landscapes, and a beautiful section of nicely shaded tree canopy. Just past mile 10 runners will pass a rocking on-course band and then make a right onto NE Jernsted Road for a 1.6 mile section of gravel road through farmlands (the only non-paved section of the course). Runner turn right onto NE Old McMinnville Highway where the pavement resumes. With a half mile to go runners make the final turn onto Main Street and continue into downtown Carlton where a friendly crowd cheers the field all the way down the final stretch and through the finish line. Here, hydrate and have a bite at the post race refueling tent, then grab a glass and celebrate with your family and friends at the Finish Line Wine and Music Festival presented by Ken Wright Cellars, featuring complimentary tastings from 20 plus premier local wineries.
2 person relay teams will run on the same course, with the exchange point located at mile 6.1 at Abbey Road Farms.
This is a point-to-point course. Designated event parking is available at either the start or finish area, and shuttle bus transportation will be available between both parking locations before and after the race. Gear Check will be available at the starting line and relay transition point and all checked gear will be transported to the finish line. Checked gear must be claimed at the finish line.
Time Limit
To enter the half marathon you must be able to finish the course in 3 hours and 30 minutes and keep a 16:00/mile pace or better. Casual walkers are not permitted in the half marathon due to this time limit. 2 person relay teams must also be able to finish the course in a cumulative time of 3 hours and 30 minutes. If you cannot keep the required pace on course, you will not be guaranteed course supervision by law enforcement and volunteers. Transportation to the finish area for non-finishers without medical problems will be provided via the SAG vehicle. In the event you cannot finish the race, or fall behind the 16 min/mile pace, please make your way to the nearest aid station and ask for SAG assistance. The SAG vehicle will be following the final runner/walker and pick up at each aid station.
Aid Stations
Six will be placed on-course between the start and finish areas, approximately every two miles. Water will be offered at each aid station and an electrolyte sports drink will be provided at every other aid station.
5k Run and Walk Course
8:00am start at Ken Wright Cellars
Our festive and scenic 5k Run/Walk will start and finish at Ken Wright Cellars in downtown Carlton, offering a fast course with just the right amount of country charm. The out-and-back route heads east on Main Street and then onto Hendricks Road, as the roadside view transforms into rich farmland and vineyard-laden hillsides. Runners and walkers will get a burst of energy from a live band performing as they approach Johnson Road, and might even get to high five a few of the fastest half marathon finishers running by. Shortly up the gravel road, a rustic old country barn serves as the 5k turnaround point.
Timing & Results
The race is chip timed. Runners will receive a chip and gun time in the results. Top 3 overall finishers are based on gun time, all other finisher results use chip time results. The timing chips are disposable and do not need to be returned.
