For skaters 18 years and older The Silver Skate Festival challenges you to five Northgate Skate Races on the lake at Hawrelak Park. Take on yourself, the clock... and a friend with races of 1 km, 5km, 10km 1 hour, and the Kortebaan sprints. All types of skate blades are welcome. The Series Pass includes participation in *all* skate races. This includes the 1k, 5k, 10k, 1-Hour, and the Kortebaan Race and for just one price. Note: The series pass does *not* include participation in either the Silver Skate Ice Duathlon or the Mammoet Winter Triathlon.

Northgate Kortebaan (Feb. 16) Closed

The Dutch Kortebaan (pronounced “kor-te-ban”) is a traditional speed-skating sprint race held on outdoor ice. The Northgate Kortebaan is matched sprints with a tournament-style format. Pairs of skaters race down a straight, 160m route on frozen Hawrelak Park Lake. One by one, skaters are eliminated until the final two compete in a sudden-death race. Historically, the kortebaan was one of the first formats used to declare skating champions in Holland. Winners were usually awarded prize money – and a ham. Skaters under 18 years old get $5 age discount.

No refunds for sporting events.
Silver Skate Festival, the Edmonton Speed Skate Association, and partners will make every reasonable attempt to host each of these sporting events. The safety of athletes, volunteers, and officials is paramount. Organizers will monitor conditions and the weather forecast in advance and during events. If circumstances require, organizers may modify events to mitigate risk and make the events more safe.
These options may include shortening the event, shifting the time of the event, or shifting the date of the event. Decisions will be made in consultation with partners.
Cancellation of the event is at the sole discretion of the organizers.
If organizers exhaust all options for hosting the event, Silver Skate Festival will honour full registration credits towards other events and/or the same event in the next year. (Note: This credit does NOT apply to purchases of merchandise or processing fees.)
PLAY SAFE, PLAY FAIR, HAVE FUN!
Specific to Mammoet Winter Trithlon or Silver Skate Ice Duathlon
- If snow conditions make skiing not possible, the Winter Triathlon will become an Ice Duathlon (run, skate, run).
- If ice conditions make skating not possible, the Winter Triathlon will become a Snow Duathlon (run, ski).
- If conditions for either event allow only running, both events will be cancelled for the year.
