Re: The Cumby Trail Race is Cancelled due to the COVID 19 Pandemic
In light of the COVID 19 outbreak, the Cumby organizing committee and the Comox Valley Road Runners have cancelled the 5th running of the Cumby Trail Race which was to be held on May 9th, 2020. Registered racers can anticipate a letter from the race director on March 21 and March 24th. The Cumby Organizing Committee explored alternative options however, we are listening to all of the public health experts who are begging us collectively to keep our distance from one another in order to flatten the curve of this pandemic. COVID 19 has become very real to many British Columbians and Canadians. We want to do our part. We thank you for your enthusiasm for the Cumby Trail Race which is evident by how quickly our racers registered for all three events. We will be following up to announce what The Cumby Trail Race and the CVRR have donated to the Cumberland Community Forest on your behalf.
We thank you. The Cumberland Community Forest thanks you.
We look forward to seeing you next year on May 8th, 2021.
Wishing you and your family safety and health during this extraordinary global health challenge.
The Cumby is celebrating its FIFTH year as a fundraising event in support of the Cumberland Community Forest Society's efforts to preserve the forests surrounding the historic town of Cumberland. Thanks to the generous support of our runners and sponsors we've so far managed to donate over $64,000 to this great cause. The CCFS is supported by hundreds of donors and the Comox Valley Road Runners are proud to be counted as one of the top FIVE fundraisers for the CCFS. Check out the YouTube video at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HxP3t4J_7ew to see the monumental efforts of the CCFS to purchase and preserve large tracts of pristine forest on Cumberland's perimeter. We are thrilled you have chosen to support this cause.
The Comox Valley Road Runners (CVRR) are again hosting a 25k Full Cumby and a 13k Half Cumby trail race, and our newest race, the 5k Mini Cumby, introduced last year to provide opportunities for our younger runners to race and for walkers to explore the Cumberland Community Forest at a slower pace. We want to encourage children and youth to learn about trail racing in our gnarly Cumberland Hills, We anticipate that parents and guardians will know their kid's capacity for safety on the trail and will carefully decide if they need to be accompanied during the race by a racing adult. Please know your child's limits and be prepared to sign a waiver on race day.
The Cumby 2020 will take place in the hills above the picturesque and historic village of Cumberland. Where once it was the largest Chinese community north of San Francisco and was supported by coal mining, in the last decade Cumberland has developed a new reputation as a mecca for mountain biking and outdoor adventure. The Cumby takes advantage of an extensive system of bike trails. The route also includes parts of the Vancouver Island Spine Trail and provides scenic vistas of Baynes Sound and Georgia Strait.
The race starts in No. 6 Mine Heritage Park in downtown Cumberland and proceeds through the Cumberland Community Forest and adjacent working forests. The race route takes a steady climb through rich timberland and reclaimed logging areas. CVRR promises you a fast, technical race that is predominantly single track, with tough but runnable uphill climbs, stream crossings, narrow bridges and fast descents. The Half Cumby will follow the Full Cumby route to the half way point before a quick romp to the finish line. There will be active logging on the route in early 2020 therefore race routes may change. You are running through a working forest.
Visit our website www.thecumby.ca for full details of the 5k, 13k and 25k events.
Only 300 spots available in the 13k, 200 spots in the 25 km event and the 5k is capped at 150 runners and walkers.
PLEASE NOTE - you must be at least 16 on race day to participate in the 25k. All Cumby particpants under 19 on race day must have parental consent, and parents/guardians must review the on-line waiver and by completion of on-line registration are considered to have accepted all the terms and conditions of the waiver. Parents may also be requested to sign a waiver on behalf of their child on race day. Please note this is a wilderness race and runners must be prepared to use good judgment to keep themselves safe with adequate fuel and fluids and be able to follow a marked course.
Looking forward to seeing you on Race Day! Saturday May 9, 2020
Please note our new start times - 1 hour earlier to allow for cooler running temperatures.
One last note - Transfers - we will allow you after initial registration to transfer from one event to another, subject to certain pricing adjustments and to space availability in the new event. If you have purchased product with the initial registration your product purchase will be cancelled when you transfer to the new event, however you simply need to repurchase the item at no cost with the new registration to preserve the item on your file. It's a bit weird but that's how Race Roster handles transfers.
