Canaan Valley State Park Foundation is hosting the 1st Annual Sunrise Scramble.
It's an uphill fun ski race. It's a fundraiser. It's a winter sports awareness event. It's about being outside and playing in the snow for your health and wellness. It's snow and sweat.
Grab your ski gear that gets you uphill on the snow and join us for a sunrise with a mass start of snow enthusiasts heading up the slopes of Canaan Valley Resort State Park.
Canaan Valley State Park Foundation hopes to achieve three goals with the Sunrise Scramble that align with our overall mission.
- Fundraising - we are currently raising funds for a large pavilion on the park as well as smaller projects that enhance the park for all guests.
- Outdoor Recreation - bring awareness to Canaan Valley Ski Resort to develop an uphill ski policy for times when the backcountry does not allow for this type of winter sport due to lack of snow.
- Community Events – enough said.
RACE CATEGORIES:
SKIN or SCALES categories with male and female divisions in each.
Ages: - Kids - 8 - 17, Adults 18 - 34, Adults 35 - 55, Adults 55 +

Q: Can you walk or run uphill and ski down?
No. "What goes up, must come down" has never been more true. You need to ride down the hill on the same ski gear that you use to climb up the mountain. This also means no climbing up on lightweight scaled skis with a backpack full of downhill tele gear on your back and expect to switch once you reach the top.
Q: What is the planned course?
Here is the course route:
Start/Finish - Outside of ski school entrance on Critter Crawl.
Scramble starts going down Critter Crawl -->Around B Lift --> up Bunny Buster --> Across A Lift base area then:
SCALES: -->Head up Lower Timber --> to Cutback --> across Valley Vista --> to Snowfields
SKINS --> Head up Face --> to Snow Fields
All Skiers:
Up Lower Canaan Curve/Buck Run --> Upper Spruce (TOP OF THE COURSE)
Down Ski Daddler --> to Valley Vista
SCALES --> Cutback --> to Lower Timber
SKINS --> Down Face
All Skiers:
Up Sissy Schuss
Down B Slope
Up Critter Crawl to Finish
Q: Is my registration fee refundable?
No. Thank you for your donation. You can reach out to us and we can transfer the registration fee to someone else. Keep in mind we will be using slopes at the ski area where snowmaking is happening throughout the season and we will have a race.
What's included with registration?
A hot breakfast burrito will be served after the race to all participants. And Fun! And a part of history! And yes, we are gathering some swag.
