Fletcher’s Challenge 2020 Update

In response to recommendations from the BC Ministry of Health regarding COVID-19, it is with regret that the 13th Annual Fletcher’s Challenge Trail Race and Family Run/Walk scheduled for April 10th, 2020 has been cancelled. The health and safety of trail racers, families, volunteers and the community are at the heart of this decision.

Although the event has been cancelled for this year, our commitment to assisting underprivileged children and youth access sports continues. We will allocate your entry fees to this purpose unless you say otherwise. In appreciation, your entry fee will be carried forward for the 2021 Fletcher’s Challenge Trail Race and Family Run/Walk.

We look forward to your participation in the 2021 event which will be held on April 2nd, 2021.

We are excited to announce that the Trail Race will once again be point to point. Last year, we had a record number of registrants for the trail race and an awesome showing for the family run/walk.

Please join us in making the 13th Annual Fletcher's Challenge event for 2020 the biggest and most fun ever. There is fun to be had for people of all ages.

The Fletcher's Challenge event is organized by Runners of Compassion and all money raised is put towards their mission of financially supporting kids to gain access to sports.

Trail Race - This year the course is approximately 15 km point-to-point race, and will again feature some of Nanaimo's best trails. This will be a timed event, and guaranteed fun. All participants must carry water during the race.

The course is reminiscent of previous Fletcher's Challenge courses in both it's difficulty and character so start your training now. There is a cut off. Runners will be rewarded for their efforts with stunning trails, and world class views.

PACKAGE PICKUP For Point to Point Trail Racers:

Race Day bib pickup for the trail race takes place between 8:30am - 9:20am at Westwood Lake. The bus transporting runners to the start leaves promptly at Westwood Lake at 9:30am. Don't miss the bus! And don't forget to bring water. All racers must carry water during the race.

6km Family Cookie Run/Walk - Gather up the kids, and come on out for the ever-popular cookie walk! This event is a blast for those of all ages. Entrants enjoy a single lap around Westwood Lake, and are treated to a cookie station along the way for some extra motivation. The main goal is to have fun.

The family run/walk will start from Westwood Lake at 10:00am.

Easter Egg Hunt - If the thrill of running around the lake and eating cookies is not enough to motivate your kids to participate, then how about the lure of the post-run Easter egg hunt?

There will be some excellent door prizes available from our sponsors, as well as awards for the top trail racer finishers in their age groups.

GAVIN FLETCHER:

This running event memorializes Mr. Gavin Fletcher who died at too young an age. He was a well-known sports columnist, a member of ROC, a husband and father.

His family values were paramount but his love of good fun competition in sports was unequalled. It is with this intent that we fashion The Fletcher's Challenge, held each year on Good Friday open to both runners and walkers.

It is about participation, having fun and enjoying some physical activity with your family. A big draw is the cookie run for kids around Westwood Lake. However; cookies are not the exclusive domain of the kids, as all runners and walkers are treated to some pretty good home-baked treats after their run/walk!
