Martin Center’s 24th Annual Sickle Cell 5K Walk/Run Goes Virtual for 2020
As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, Martin Center Sickle Cell Initiative (MCSCI) had to make the difficult decision to convert our annual 5K walk/run into a virtual event. This means that participants will be walking or running on their own wherever they feel it is safe to do so. Participants will be interacting virtually with us and other participants on social media from 8:30 A.M. to 12:00 P.M. (EST) on August 29, 2020. Participants will receive an official certificate of participation after posting their photo, type of participation (running or walking) and the time it took them to complete the distance. Event T-shirts are available for an additional fee. All participants who participate will be recognized on the MCSCI website. We invite you to join us from your safe place for the 24th Annual Sickle Cell 5K/Walk Run Virtual Edition, a 5K (3.1 mile) event to benefit persons affected by Sickle Cell Disease in Central Indiana.
MCSCI needs donations from supporters like you to be able to continue our work. As you might imagine, the global pandemic has been especially difficult for people with Sickle Cell Disease (SCD). SCD has been recognized by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as a pre-existing condition that puts those affected at higher levels of risk for severe complications from COVID-19. The money raised from this event will help MCSCI provide its clients with many forms of assistance like rent, utilities, transportation, food, and other forms of support. There are hundreds of families in Central Indiana living with the burden of Sickle Cell Disease. Many of those families need additional support which Martin Center Sickle Cell Initiative (MCSCI) strives to provide. Your participation in the 23rd Annual Sickle Cell 5K Walk/Run will enable MCSCI to fill those gaps with quality supportive services.
The Annual Sickle Cell 5K Walk/Run is our premier fundraising event. Proceeds benefit our programs which aim to aid and enhance the lives of those affected by Sickle Cell. This includes Sickle Cell education, family support, food pantry, monthly support groups, and advocacy.
