Why Run Spiral Drive?

The Spiral Drive Run celebrates the iconic Tenderfoot "S" Mountain and Spiral Drive that was created through the efforts of volunteers from the City of Salida during the 1920's.

CSU Professor Elmore Petersen when asked about Spiral Drive in 1922 said:

Salida presents an unusual manifestation of the results of actual cooperative effort. One of these days, her ‘Tenderfoot Spiral Drive’ will be nationally famous. It is an automobile boulevard which winds around the cone shaped Tenderfoot Mountain just opposite the city, forming a cork-screw to the top, 600 feet above the streets below. From this summit the view of Salida itself, the Arkansas River Valley, the Sangre de Christo and Collegiate ranges of mountains, is too much for words. And over it all spread the snowy wings (literally of snow) of The Angel of Shavano such as may be seen nowhere else in all the world. But what I started to say was that this road is entirely the product of cooperative effort and not one dollar has been spent for labor, excepting what money was donated to the cause….The next time anyone in your town crabs around that there is nothing the local chamber of commerce can do, I respectfully refer you to Salida, that has struck a stride worthy of emulation

COURSE:

• A 4 mile run ascending Salida's iconic Tenderfoot "S" Mountain via Spiral Drive.

START/FINISH:

• 9:00am Across the river bridge from Riverside Park (F and Sackett Streets) in downtown Salida, at the base of Tenderfoot (“S”) Mountain.

  • April 24th from 5:00pm to 7:00pm at 7000 Feet Running Co.

• Race Day

  • April 25th from 8:00-8:45 a.m. at Riverside Park at the North End of F street in downtown Salida. (a block from Hwy 291)

Registration Policies:

• Refunds
  • Unfortunately, due to the size of the event and the price we will not be able to issue refunds.
• Transfers
  • Transfers will be allowed through April 24th, 2020. Transfers can made through the online registration system.
• Cancellation
  • Chaffee County Running Club reserves the right to cancel or alter the race due to conditions outside our control, such as weather, fires, or other acts of nature. We will do our best to return a portion of the race fee if the race is canceled, but please remember that we incur a cost regardless if the race occurs. Runner safety is our priority.
• Waitlist
  • The Spiral Drive Run is capped at 100 entrants. Once this cap has been reached, additional entrants will be added to a wait list (maintained by Race Roster)

Entry Fees:

• $15 until Sunday April 19th; $10 for CCRC Members; Interested in becoming a member? Check out ChaffeeRunning.org

• $20 from April 20th to April 25th; $15 for CCRC Members

Timing and results:

• The race will be timed. Time limit is 80 minutes (walkers welcome). Results emailed, posted online & at finish

Race Day Schedule April 25th, 2020:

• 9:00 a.m.
  • Spiral Drive Run Start across the railroad tracks from the F Street Bridge Parking Lot. Spectators are welcome at the start finish line. Please keep pets leased for the safety of runners and spectators.
• 10:00a.m.
  • Cool down with a short jog to Riverside Park for the Post race festivities. You will be able to pick-up your commemorative Spiral Drive Run finisher prize at Riverside Park.
• 10:20am
  • Finish line is closed
• 10:30am
  • Awards Ceremony
