ALL PARTICIPANTS (*Additional important info for my fellow Canadian participants/donors below*)
A virtual event to honor the life of Rick Henderson, who passed away from lung cancer on September 19, 2013. The name of the event pays tribute to a word he used way more than he probably should have. Papa Hendo would've turned 70 this year, and it also marks my (Josh Henderson's) seventh year smoke-free. My brother Luke & I were going to keep it between siblings but thought, in the true philanthropic spirit of our Dad, why not try to raise some money for good while we're at it. The registration is free of charge (aside from a small processing fee), but we are partnering with the American Lung Association and ask that you donate a minimum of $15 alongside your registration. The American Lung Association are an organization who not only continue to research and study lung health and wellness, advocate for smoke-free living and examine the harmful effects of air quality in our communities - but have recently launched a $25 million dollar COVID-19 Action Initiative: https://www.lung.org/research/about-our-research/covid19-action-initiative. I know that with the pandemic, financial strain is understandably a huge concern for many, so we wanted the initial donation to be reasonable, but our fundraising goal is still an ambitious $4000, so please do as much outreach as you can and be sure to pass along race info, it would be much appreciated. You can cover whatever amount of distance you'd like, but our goal is a combined 1000 kilometers and we will have some prizes for specific challenges, which are outlined below. The date is September 19th, 2020 but you will have from 12AM on the 19th until Saturday October 3rd, 2020 to complete your activity and log your mileage, which can then be reported on the event page. The most important thing is to have fun and continue being kind to your body and lungs.
CANADIAN PARTICIPANTS
If you are registering in Canada, please use the sub-event registration link that specifies you are a *Canadian Participant*. Your registration here will also be free (aside from a small processing fee) but we wanted to ensure you receive an applicable electronic tax receipt, so we ask that you make a minimum $15 donation to the Canadian Cancer Society (or to another charity, in honor of my Dad or one of your loved ones), which Luke has setup a fundraising page for here: https://support.cancer.ca/site/TR/IFE_ON_Event/IFE_ON_General_?px=13462870&pg=personal&fr_id=27159. The funds raised for the Cancer Society will be designated to and directly benefit lung cancer research, support and programs. For more information about the organization visit: https://www.cancer.ca/. We will be tracking donations from both sides of the border in hopes of hitting our goal of $4000.
With this being our first year doing anything like this, it's a bit bare bones - but we hope to make it more of an event next year and each subsequent year.
MERCH
We have a limited number of hats and t-shirts available during registration as well, with proceeds also benefitting the American Lung Association and Canadian Cancer Society and going towards our goal. They are only available to participants in the USA and Canada and include the shipping fee in the price.
In addition, we will be giving away a few of those items for three challenges - they include:
Challenge #1 - the first participant to log 7 miles on September 19th will win a merch item of their choice.
Challenge #2 - the biggest bonehead of the bunch will win a merch item of their choice. Luke & I will decide how boneheaded you were during your activity, whether it be going straight uphill or logging a ridiculous amount of miles, with boneheadedness, the sky is the limit (*just please be safe).
Challenge #3 - for those with a GPS watch or if you're using a fitness app on your phone, we're awarding a merch items to the participants who can create the best lightning bolt Strava art (for those unfamiliar with the concept, please see images below). And keep in mind that you can use most fitness apps/trackers to create your Bonehead Bolt masterpiece (*again, pleeeease be safe). Also, join our Bonehead Bolters Strava club if you're on there (https://www.strava.com/clubs/bonehead).
Thanks so much for participating and for honoring a man we miss so dearly and for supporting a cause that means so much to the Henderson family!
