ADFRAA VIRTUAL RUNS – SAFETY GUIDANCE SUPPLEMENT
Exercise is an important aspect of managing your resilience and mental well-being during the COVID 19 restrictions (https://objective/id:BN15451894). The following is guidelines for ADFRAA members participating in the virtual events and is intended to supplement the ADFRAA standing risk assessment for Road Runs.
When deciding how you participate, please ensure you are maintaining appropriate social distancing protocols, which includes ensuring you’re at a safe physical distance from those around you.
- DO NOT compete if you are unwell. If at any stage during the period the virtual event is open you become unwell, please do not complete the activity. You will not be financially penalised and are instead requested to email adfraa.mailbox@defence.gov.au to notify your withdrawal the event. All reporting of serious illness should be via your chain of command per respective COVID directives.
- ENSURE you are ready. Do not attempt a virtual event unless you have done a range of appropriate pre-training. Now is not the time to push yourself too hard and risk lowering your immune system or other injuries due to a lack of pre-training.
- STAY safe and comply with COVID 19 guidance. A virtual event does not change COVID 19 guidance with only groups of 2 and preferably just those you live with.
- Avoid highly populated areas, maintain social distance, avoid touching surfaces and your face while outdoors, wash your hands thoroughly immediately once home.
- Ensure you are not breaching State restrictions, e.g. border crossings, non-essential travel outside of your local region (particularly within NSW and VIC).
- If you reside in an area of high community transmissions, consider alternate options to conducting the event, such as a treadmill or laps within your residence.
- Consider the time when you are going outside and avoid busy times. (eg early in the morning or late in the day, and avoiding streets and parks with high foot)
- Consider the use of hi-viz clothing or headlights when running in low light conditions and take care around traffic or when running off road
- Let family or friends know when and where you are planning to attempt the event. There are also various “track my run” options via the various GPS apps that can allow live tracking by another person.
- Ensure you have appropriate hydration and race nutrition as appropriate. It is recommended that you trial these items prior to the race itself.
Do not participate unless you have considered all COVID 19 implications with respective work commitments and safety guidance.
If you are unsure, please consult your chain of command.
