On Sunday, October 18th, 1:30 pm, join us in celebrating the kick-off to our Fall Hiking Series and the Delaps Cove Wilderness Trail's 35th Anniversary; the Municipality's very first park/trail.
We will be offering three guided hikes for this special event (please take note of participant numbers allotted for each hike):
- A guided hike around Bohaker Trail (approx. 2.4) - 15 person limit
- An interpreted, guided hike around Bohaker Trail with special guest Gini Proulx who will be sharing her vast knowledge of the flora and fauna in the area - 10 person limit
- A guided hike around Charlie's Trail (approx. 9 kms) - 10 person limit
If the event is full you can email nbarteaux@annapoliscounty.ca and be placed on a waiting list. You will be notified if a space becomes available.
There will be prizes and pre-packed snack packs available.
A little bit about the Delaps Cove Wilderness trail:
The trail starts and ends in the parking lot and consists of two trails: Bohaker Trail and Charlies Trail. If you hike both trails the distance is about 10 kms and will take about 3-4 hours. The most popular of the two trails is the Bohaker Trail which is approximately 2.4 kms.
The trail encompasses three main ecosystems - 1) forest, 2) coastline, and 3) stream. Each ecosystem has its own unique flora and fauna with interpretation signs located along the way to provide you with information about the natural habitat; and, during this special event, our expert guest will expand on this information.
This trail system is also alive with history. The area was once a thriving Black settlement with, at one time, close to 70 inhabitants. Census shows that this community was in existence since, at least, 1838 but it's believed to date back much further. Perhaps to the period after the American Revolution. Visitors can observe rock walls, foundations and lilac bushes on more remote areas of the trail.
Covid-19 Regulations:
During these times we must be diligent of our surroundings and be sure to following the guidelines set before us by the Province. As you will notice, we have limited the number of participants this year and informed everyone that registration is required. I will keep a waiting list in case someone cannot make the event and a spot opens up.
As you register, you will also notice an additional disclaimer this year that speaks to the pandemic. We will ask that you bring your covid-19 kit (mask and hand sanitizer). There will be some on-site, as well. Also, during the event we ask that you do your best to maintain physical distancing and respect one another's space.
Yes, the pandemic has altered our "normal" but it isn't going to stop us from being outside and enjoying all the beauty that we are so fortunate to have around us. We just have to remember to follow the guidelines, respect others, and be safe.
