6th Annual
Stop, Drop & 5k Run/Walk
June 6, 2021 – Sunday
Lewes, DE
The goal of this race is to purchase two Thermal Imaging Cameras (TIC). By equipping Lewes Fire Department with these devices, firefighters can potentially save more lives and protect property by increasing two vital parts of an emergency call: speed and safety. Thermal Imaging Cameras (TIC) can help locate victims, pets and hot spots quickly when every second counts; can help firefighters find their own way out in zero visibility conditions; reduce rekindles by ensuring that the fire is completely extinguished; and assess the scene for heat related clues. Faster ways to search buildings for people and animals can save more lives. Also, once it is established all people and animals have been rescued from a burning structure, water can be applied on a building sooner which will potentially save property from being further damaged. In 2019, Lewes Fire Dept. ran 5,171 emergency calls. With consideration to the fact that the Cape region is undergoing a building boom and more that 5,000 residential building units are under construction with at least that many pending approval, it is safe to say that the Lewes Fire Dept. will need more life saving tools.
