My Story…
It's been a long time coming but Falmouth is finally road race ready, and team MitoAction is ready to cross the finish line for the fight against Mito!
MitoAction is a non-profit organization that was formed in 2005 to support those affected by mitochondrial disease. Originally formed as a small New England support group, the organization has grown to make a considerable impact supporting and advocating for those affected by the illness, and educating people on the disease worldwide.
Mitochondrial disease is a chronic illness that can be be present at birth or develop later in life. It causes many symptoms including but not limited to debilitated physical, developmental and cognitive abilities, loss of muscle coordination, muscle weakness and organ failure. It is a progressive disease that currently has no cure. Mitochondrial disease can affect the cells of vital organs of the body, which can lead to illness that is mild or fatal.
While the field of mitochondrial medicine is still relatively new, current treatment for the disease can help reduce or delay the progression of the disease. It is the work of organizations like MitoAction that plays a massive role in prompting research and support that can advance these treatment methods.
Please consider donating to Team MitoAction to help them continue the fight against mitochondrial disease!
