My Story…
For years I’ve enjoyed being host for the Falmouth Road Race – getting runners to the early morning bus, cheering as runners came by my house just after mile marker 5 and having a post-race BBQ for family and friends.
This year I’ll be an official runner – doing the remote option for more flexibility in how I complete the 7 miles.
Why?
One thing I’ve learned over my 86 years is that things can go from smooth sailing to choppy waters in an instant. Like the families I’ve met through The Genesis Foundation, I never expected life to throw me a curve ball years ago when I was a young family man living in my first home and raising 4 healthy kids. But one day my baby daughter didn’t look well - her doctors at first thought it was nothing, but we knew something was wrong. Eventually we took her to the big medical center and learned that she had a rare type of juvenile diabetes. Overnight we had to learn all about this disease and how to care for her, how to arrange home nurses and how to give insulin. At the same time, we had 3 other kids and work to juggle. Tragically, the medical technology at the time was not advanced enough and we lost our beautiful Laura to complications shortly after she was diagnosed. The doctors didn’t know why – and we were left with a lot of unanswered questions.
So, at 86 yo, I’ve decided to run the Falmouth Road Race to raise money for The Genesis Foundation for Children which helps families facing rare and unexpected conditions. It helps connect them with the best doctors and treatments and gets them answers.
Through my daughter Kate’s work with The Genesis Foundation for Children, I have met many families who are helped by this organization. I’ve met the kids with rare disorders and seen firsthand their determination and spirit. I’ve heard from their parents how The Genesis Foundation has helped them get the best care for their child.
Please consider making a donation to this wonderful organization and send me some encouraging words as I train for the race.
Thank you,
Dave.
