The Kitchener Waterloo Cycling Academy (KWCA) is a not-for-profit corporation registered in Ontario, and is affiliated with Ontario Cycling & Cycling Canada. The organization is run by volunteers who love to cycle and are passionate about developing skills in young athletes, with professional coaching staff who have been developing youth programs for over 10 years. We specialize in MTB (mountain biking), track, and road cycling, with athletes and coaches all licensed to attend Regional camps, and Ontario & National projects in these disciplines.
The KWCA proudly supports youth cyclists from Waterloo Region and beyond. Programs and training take place at various locations in Waterloo Region, including Puslinch Tract, the Hydrocut, and our cycling studio in Uptown Waterloo, as well as Mattamy National Cycling Centre in Milton and Forest City Veldrome in London. For competitive cyclists, races take place all over Ontario and beyond.
KWCA is a full service club that promotes participation to help gain fitness, strength, speed and the skills required for safe cycling. Our cycling programs take young recreational cyclists from 5 years old to high performance Junior (U19) athletes who attend National & World Championships, with a high performance program designed to put athletes on the podium. Whether your family rides the road, or the trails at Puslinch or the Hydrocut, and whether your interest is recreational or competitive, we have a program for your children.
We look forward to supporting all children as they progress through our cycling programs.
Cycling Lingo:
Mountain Biking (MTB):
There are many types of bikes available for use on the Trails in Ontario. We suggest spending a little on your equipment when the kids are 6-10 years old. They will out grow what ever bike you purchase. The larger the wheel .... the easier it is for the youngest Cyclists to go over obsticals. Families new to MTBing should ask many questions before investing in a Trail bike for their kids. As your child progresses through the KWCA programs, our coaching staff will be able to point you in the right direction. Depending on skills & speed, your child will be placed in the appropriate category to have the most fun. During the season, we attend many races from Kelso (Local series) on Tuesday evening's and Ontario Cup (Regional) on weekends.
More information will be available very soon.
Road Cycling:
KW Cycling Academy begins developing Road cyclists as the youth of our club can maintain 25kph for an hour. KWCA have invested in Loaner road bikes to make it easier for our MTB kids to try training on the road. We have 2 sessions for our u13 riders during the spring & summer. Our Team also promotes 3 speedway road events to help give youth (Road & MTB) across Ontario an opportunity to participate in grassroots racing. Fitness for all age groups is greatly improved with consistent road rides... They will be continued in 2021.
Track Cycling:
Track is where our team started many years ago. The programming at Forest City Velodrome was geared to Youth and we are going back to our roots in October.
Beginning with our own Track time on Saturdays (5pm - 7pm), we will be able to gear the training for our Track athletes.
Our Professional Track Coach has years of developing athletes to compete at the Junior World Championships. during the last 13 years, 14 athletes have attended Jr Track Worlds after training with our Team. Its a goal that can be achieved for any youth Cyclist in our program.
Team Alumni - Nick Wammes - (Bothwell) is a graduate of our Road/Track program is going to be representing Canada at the Toyko Olympics in July 2021.
Try the Track is a easy way for your family to see all the benefits of the speed and skill you can develop on the track.
