Why I support West Cancer Foundation
I have breast cancer, and I am getting better. I pray that I will soon be able to call myself a cancer survivor. My mother, "Ms. Wanda", has Stage 4 breast cancer. Unfortunately, we recently received the news that her cancer returned and is in her spine. We are both patients at West.
Cancer is cruel. Cancer is scary. Cancer is hard. Cancer is an emotional roller coaster.
As disability lawyers, my mom and I have both focused our careers on being advocates for the disabled in our community. We are passionate about helping those who are struggling with illnesses. As difficult as my and my mother's situations are, we are fortunate to have access to wonderful health insurance and the means to pay for whatever treatment we feel is medically necessary. We never had to have sleepless nights figuring out how we will pay for our treatment or how we would get a ride to a chemotherapy appointment like so many of our clients. I never had to stress about paying for my $90 compression sleeve (FYI, insurance does not cover these.) to prevent lymphedema following my double mastectomy. I never had to wonder how I would pay for mastectomy supplies or breast prosthesis. I was fortunate to be able to pay for a cold-cap in order to keep the majority of my hair during and following my chemotherapy treatments. There are individuals in our community who don't even have the extra funds to pay for a ride to their appointment, much less a wig.
West Cancer Foundation provides assistance to patients who are uninsured or underinsured. They have wonderful resources such as Lymphedema Assistance, Post-Mastectomy Assistance, and even a Wig Boutique. To have cancer is hard enough. I cannot even fathom what it is like to be battling for your life while at the same time struggling to obtain the basic necessities to make life with cancer more manageable.
So, I am asking for your help. Donati Law is asking for your help. We want to raise money for the West Cancer Foundation. We want to continue to advocate for individuals battling severe illness. Help us support an organization that serves cancer patients who are uninsured or underinsured in our MidSouth Community.
