In 1978, 11 people died in a tragic fire at the Portage Developmental Centre. The next year, John Robertson, a journalist on CBC-TV, resolved that it would never happen again. He inspired a small group of friends to take on the enormous concept of a new event – the Manitoba Marathon – to support Manitobans who live with an intellectual disability. And right from Day 1 in 1979, the participants in the Manitoba Marathon have made every mile count, creating a more inclusive community by raising millions of dollars to support hundreds of projects across Manitoba.

Manitoba Marathon and United Way Winnipeg are partnering so that your race can provide life-changing support for Manitobans with intellectual disabilities.

We can make sure people have the chance to be more independent and active in our community—from learning to take the bus to making life-long friends, there is so much we can do to empower people and encourage inclusion!

Every step of your race will make an impact on a person’s life. It’s as easy as emailing a few family members and friends and asking for their support.

What kind of difference can you make?

A world of difference! People can find a place for themselves in the community when they learn the life skills and develop the friendships they need to feel included.

And thanks to a generous grant from the Province of Manitoba which supports United Way Winnipeg’s fundraising and administration costs, every dollar you raise will be invested directly into programs that support inclusion for all Manitobans.

The Manitoba Marathon requires hundreds of volunteers to work in many different areas over race weekend: in the days before the race, during the race, and following the race.
