Florida Turkey Trot

At Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota

Fit2Run and Nathan Benderson Park are coming together to provide a 5K Turkey Trot to help local families kick off their Thanksgiving! This race will be a part of your Thanksgiving tradition as you celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday with a 5K at Nathan Benderson Park.

All participants will receive a race shirt, race bib, and finisher's medal. Kids 12 and under can register for just $25, so the whole family can trot together this Thanksgiving!

Proceeds from the race benefit the Big Bill Foundation 501c3 and The Suncoast Aquatic Nature Center Associates, Inc. (SANCA), a not-for-profit 501c3 business created to manage Nathan Benderson Park, a community/public asset and world class, multi-use sports venue. SANCA’s mission is to improve the quality of life for our community and be an economic generator for our region.

There will be no race day registration

Participants who would like to pick up on race day must opt for race day pickup at the link below and pay the $10 handling fee prior to 11/18/21 https://raceroster.com/store/38901/listing

All participants who opt for race day pickup will have their packet and bib preassigned. There will be no exceptions. If you don’t opt to pick up on race day you must pick up your packet prior to race day at one of the packet pickup locations. Race day packet pickup for those that opt in will be available at the tower at Nathan Benderson Park from 6AM – 7:30AM.

Participants who would like their packet shipped must opt in for packet shipping prior to 11/18/21. If you would like to opt for bib shipping, please sign up at the link below https://raceroster.com/store/38901/listing

If you are not able to make it to packet pickup you can have someone else pickup for you by having them bring in your confirmation email

Can't make it to NBP on race day, but still want the Florida Turkey Trot to be a part of your Thanksgiving tradition? Run the Virtual 5K whenever and wherever you can and get the official race shirt and finisher's medal. Virtual participants are not eligible for Top Finisher prizes but do qualify for participation in the Holiday Challenge. Virtual participants will have them packet shipped to them on race week.

Kids' Turkey Dash (12 & Under) Closed

Kids Dash bracketed by age group! Kids will participate in age appropriate sprints and will receive a finisher's medal, shirt and tasty treat. Kids will be grouped 3y-4y, 5y-6y, 7y-9y, 10-12y. Kids registering for the 5k are welcome to participate in the Kids Dash as well.

Weather Cancellation Policy

We value runner safety. In the event of severe weather conditions or other public safety concerns, the director(s) reserve the right to cancel the race for the safety of its participants. Registrations cancelled due to inclement weather will not be refunded, but instead used to cover event costs, with the balance being treated as a charitable donation to the event beneficiary. In the event the live race cannot be held participants will be transferred to the virtual event.

Conditions that may result in event cancellation include (but are not limited to): lightning, high winds, flooding, fires, public safety concerns, and other acts of God.

Can I pick up a packet for someone else?

Yes, you’ll just need their name and you are welcome to pick up packets for other people.

Can I register on race day?

There will be no race day registration. Registration closes on 11/24 at 4pm.

What time does the race start and when should I arrive?

Race Day Schedule:

6:00 am: Parking lot opens

7:15 am: Kids Turkey Dash sponsored by Dr. Mac starts

7:40-7:50 am: Runners to the start line

8:00am: 5K starts

8:15 am: Post Race beverages and goodies served

10:00 am: Event concludes, Happy Thanksgiving!

Where do I park?

Parking is available onsite on Regatta Island at Nathan Benderson Park. The start line will be near the finish tower and plenty of parking spots are available in the grass field. Parking attendants will be onsite at 6:00am to direct you.

What if it rains?

The event is taking place rain or shine. In the event of lightning or hazardous conditions the start time may be delayed or cancelled. Should the event be cancelled we will consider your registration fee a donation to SANCA. If there are poor weather conditions, please check The Florida Turkey Trot Facebook page for updates.

Are strollers and pets allowed in the race?

Yes! Strollers and dogs on 6’ non-retractable leashes are welcome.

Where can I use the restrooms?

Port-a-lets will be on site as well as restrooms available on the ground floor of the finish tower.

Are there water stops along the 5K course?

1 water stop will be along the course, and water will be available at the finish line.

Is the 5K chip-timed?

Yes! Timing will start as soon as the runner crosses the starting line. Results will be posted at www.fit2run.com/race-results after the race.

What could I win?

The top 100 male and top 100 female finishers will receive a commemorative coffee mug. Prizes can be picked up starting Friday 11/26 at Fit2Run UTC.

Is there anything planned for after the race?

After crossing the finish line bibbed participants will be awarded treats from Der Dutchman and bakery items from Publix. Adult beverages will be available as well for of-age participants.

What about the race course?

Where will EMS be located?

EMS will be located at the finish line on the island. Please report any issues along the course to a water station attendant.

Who is the race benefitting?

Who is the Big Bill Foundation?

Bill Robinson, who partnered with Manatee County in the late 2000s to turn 487 acres of rehabilitated farmland into the hiking trails and mangrove habitats in northwest Bradenton now known as Robinson Preserve, passed in 2020 following a hard-fought battle with leukemia at the age of 70. The Big Bill Foundation was created to honor the legacy of Bill, who loved running, surfing, going for long walks outdoors, and spending time with his family.
Bill was one of the original board members of the Suncoast Aquatic Nature Center Associates, SANCA, and served as chairman from 2014–18. He dedicated countless hours of service to make SANCA and Nathan Benderson Park a success. Bill’s passion for sport, the community and his family was evident to anyone who spent time with him. Bill Robinson was a great leader and mentor, who had a natural gift to inspire and motivate.
