Our story…
It is my firm belief that access to education should not be a privilege. In the United States of America, only 3% of students at competitive colleges come from low-income backgrounds and only 17% of low-income students graduate within four years. This disparity is one that the organisation Minds Matter which I’m a part of aims to tackle.
Minds Matter is a non profit organization whose goal is to connect driven and determined students from low-income families with a network or alumni and other services in order for them to enhance their chances of college admission and subsequent success. 100% of students from Minds Matter are accepted to 4-year colleges and universities each year, additionally more than 75% attend top tier institutions and 90% graduate within four years.
As a Team Leader, I manage a group of 18 mentors and 9 students through their three years in the program. In this role, I work to ensure the overall engagement of the team by helping everyone feel connected and supported, leading weekly sessions, overseeing mentee-mentor relationships and facilitating difficult conversations. Although I’ve only been involved with the organization for a bit over a year, I am astonished by the positive impact and growth generated through the programs’ extensive and strong curriculum, as well as the commitment of all involved.
In order for our students and Minds Matter to achieve this we need your help! Minds Matter is hosting a 3.0 miles (5K) run/walk this month to celebrate their 30th Anniversary and raise $35,000 for their NYC chapter (for the chapter as a whole and for more specific projects such as the Junior summer programs). Among others, I have created a Team and will be walking with my family and friends to raise funds with a $2,000 goal. Any form of support, by donation or joining my running team for this wonderful and important cause would mean the world. The run/walk can take place anytime during this month of April 2021 and there is a $35 registration fee. You can do it in your own time, alone or with friends etc, while keeping it Covid safe!
If you aren’t able to donate, but still want to support our cause, please feel free to share our page with your family and network. By raising awareness and garnering support, we’ll be one step closer to reaching the chapter’s goal!
