My Story…
The Year She Died .....
My mom was my very best friend. She was my tear wiper, the one who said keep trying and the one who said always do your best and what’s the worst that can happen. And all the years that she propped me up and stood behind me, she had her own battles to fight.
She was diagnosed with breast cancer at 43 years young and at a time when all they could offer was radical surgery, radiation that burned bad and experimental medication.
Through all of that - it worked - for 13 years she fought hard to keep living. I got to be with her until she was 56 - not the few months she was originally offered. That experimental medication was Tamoxifen - now widely used to save lives! Thank God for that research.
The year she died she was 56. And now I am 56. To celebrate my mom and live life well, I will run a marathon. To celebrate her living and her quiet strength and perseverance. To celebrate my mom, her marathon and the research that gave us all more time to be with those we love.
