Welcome to the start of your 116 km cycling journey in the Annapolis Valley, Nova Scotia. Your adventure begins in the beautiful area called Grand-Pré. Grand-Pré is a powerful monument that unites the Acadian people. Visitors to the site will uncover the tale of Le Grand Dérangement: a tragic event in Acadian history that has shaped the vibrant culture of modern-day Acadians across the globe through its quiet but powerful renaissance. The site commemorates the Grand Pré area as a centre of Acadian settlement from 1682 to 1755 and the Deportation of the Acadians, which began in 1755 and continued until 1762. For many Acadians throughout the world, the site remains the heart of their ancestral homeland and the symbol of the ties that unite them to this day.
Wolfville - Acadia University - 7km
Hey – You just passed Acadia University, founded in 1838. Acadia University is one of the oldest and most respected liberal arts universities in Canada. Acadia is an integral part of the quintessential college town of Wolfville, with its beautiful property overlooking the Annapolis Valley and the Bay of Fundy. When you step onto campus you enter a world of opportunity to work closely with professors, volunteer in the community, study abroad, enjoy co-op placements, and be engaged in real-world research. Acadia’s four faculties – Arts, Pure and Applied Sciences, Professional Studies, and Theology – offer more than 200 degree combinations in its undergraduate academic programs and graduate programs. Centrally located in the Annapolis Valley, halfway between Wolfville and Berwick, Kentville is home to notable festivals like the Annapolis Valley Apple Blossom Festival each spring and the Harvest Fest, featuring the well-loved Kentville Pumpkin People, each fall.
Kentville is home to many outdoor recreation facilities and trails including Miner’s Marsh, a protected marsh area, The Gorge mountain biking park, Oakdene Park featuring an impressive natural playground built with materials all found in nature and the Kentville Ravine Nature Trail, a picturesque trail winding past streams and a waterfall.
Greenwood Air Force Base - 60 km
You’ve passed the half way mark as you cycle by Greenwood Airforce Base. Nestled in the heart of Nova Scotia's beautiful Annapolis Valley rests CFB Greenwood, the largest Air Force base on the East Coast. Aurora crews conduct sovereignty and surveillance missions over the Atlantic Ocean routinely, while search and rescue capabilities are maintained 365 days of the year. Greenwood Air Force Base is Canada’s leader in developing and applying air power for airborne intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance and control and transport and rescue in global, joint and combined operations.
In 1942, CFB Greenwood established the Royal Air Force Station as part of the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan (BCATP). The BCATP was a plan to expand all Commonwealth air forces. In keeping with this objective, Greenwood was used as a training base during WWII, and before the end of the war, produced operational forces.
