Emancipation Day commemorates the Slavery Abolition Act in 1833 which ended slavery and freeing hundreds of thousands of people of African descent across the British Empire, including Canada, effectively on August 1, 1834.
On August 1, 2021, Emancipation Day will be recognized nationally across Canada for the first time in history! Soleful Runs is honoured to have been a part of the conversation to bring change to our community and country with our first Emancipation Celebration in 2020 and this petition to bring awareness to and advocate for this important moment in history to be acknowledge and celebrated nationally.
We invite you to lace up, move with pride, learn about Black Canadian History and join us for this Emancipation Celebration! Choose your distance and move with us virtually Emancipation Day, 8/1/2021 and/or join our Emancipation Month Challenge and complete 81km during the month of August on the Nike Run Club app! This is a non-profit event. Donations and proceeds from race kits sold will be donated to the Black Student-Athlete Mental Health Fund, supported by the Black Canadian Coaches Association and Canadian Centre for Mental Health and Sport.
