For the fourth year in a row, now 87 and a half, I will be part of Team Houston ( Merylie and I, Lucy, Milo, Charlotte, Penelope and Simon) In the 5k walk/run in the Scotia Bank Charity Marathon.
This is the main annual fundraising effort to support the work of the Holy Trinity Refugee Committee, which has welcomed more than 135 individuals and families since 1991, from Ethiopia, Eritrea, Afghanistan, Syria, Colombia, Turkey, El Salvador, Iran, Iraq and Rwanda. We are currently expecting three families as soon as Covid restrictions are lifted. They could all arrive very soon after travel is permitted, and we need to be ready to support them.
Team Houston is hoping to raise $10,000 of the $25,000 the Committee will need this year.
We need your help more than ever. Anything you can give will be deeply appreciated.
Our Refugee Committee invites you run or walk to support newly arrived refugees. Since 1991, we have sponsored and provided financial and moral support to around 135 refugees fleeing persecution in countries such as Afghanistan, Colombia, El Salvador, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Iran, Iraq and Rwanda. Today, they are making positive contributions to our society, both economically and socially.
We have submitted applications for two families - one from Eritrea and one from Syria - that are waiting, and we are working on a new application for a single Iraqi LGBTQ man. We are also watching for details of the resettlement plans for Afghan refugees. We need your support to accomplish this mission.
