Our story…

Escuela de Educacion Especial is a school for deaf kids going into its 10th year of operation in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. The mission of the school is to ensure that those who are Deaf become literate, independent, and productive citizens who set and achieve life goals. Sign language is at the forefront of all instruction, with academic levels from pre-school to on-line university being offered. To prepare graduates for life after school, vocational training programs in carpentry, jewelry making, sewing and art are also offered.

This year Team Captain, John Doherty, has put together a very special team comprising of four students attending EEESMA: Maricruz, Miguelito, Jesús and Laurita. You can read more about them by clicking on each of their photos on the #deafprideEEESMA team page.

On the day of the virtual walking event, planned for Friday, October 15th, at El Charco del Ingenio in San Miguel de Allende, most of the students, teachers and staff of EEESMA will be present to cheer their #deafprideEEESMA teammates onto success!

This year our team hopes to raise $5,000 to purchase tablets to help the younger students learn more Spanish, their second language after Mexican Sign Language. They are excited about a new app called "AVA" which transcribes the written word to the spoken word, allowing for communication with those that don't know sign language. This could eventually be a game changer in many social interactions, especially outside of school!

Thank you for supporting this great group of young people and EEESMA, the school they attend and rely upon, by making a pledge to your favourite #deafprideEEESMA team member today!
