Help us raise money

For participating in 2021 Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon

Our story…

Sierra Friesen was diagnosed with Auditory Neuropathy Spectrum Disorder at 6 months of age (3 months corrected). We were told that even with assistive hearing devices, she may have difficulty understanding speech and language. It was suggested that we learn ASL in order to better communicate with her. This was when we were referred to the wonderful organization Silent Voice.

We were quickly put in touch with our personal instructor Amanda. From day one, we communicated only in sign language during our classes. Both sets of grandparents were also able to attend the lessons, so that Sierra's entire family would be able to communicate with her. Amanda has been amazing at teaching us ASL, showing us many resources, and introducing us to deaf culture. We have bi-weekly sessions with her, and have had some fantastic results. Sierra and her twin sister Layla have many signs, and we feel so grateful that no matter what happens with Sierra's hearing, we will be able to communicate with her easily with ASL.

We are so grateful for Silent Voice that provided this service to us completely free of charge. At a point in our lives when were were scared for our daughter's ability to learn language, it was so reassuring to be in touch with this wonderful organization.

Parents Jeff and Natalie Friesen, Grandfather Rick Binette, and best friend Kate Reilly will be doing a relay marathon on October 17th to raise funds for this fantastic organization!
