Move to Empower

As per the Canadian Lymphedema Framework: “Lymphedema is a lifelong condition caused by a buildup of lymph fluid. This happens when the lymphatic system is either faulty or damaged and cannot function normally. It leads to chronic (long-lasting) swelling in the tissues where the lymph flow is blocked. Most often the swelling is in an arm or leg, but it can also be in the breast, trunk, genitals or head and neck”.

The Lymphedema Association of NB Inc. has a goal of establishing the NB Lymphedema Warrior Fund, which will aim to help Lymphedema patients live their fullest life possible, by providing education, support and monetary assistance. The costs of managing this condition can be excessive for some, leaving them feeling helpless, alone and in some cases with reduced mobility, as some costs are not always covered by insurance and/or Medicare (i.e. compression garments, etc.).

This conditiont has not cure, but can be managed with hard work and the right resources. The majority of the cases, approximately 70%, are cancer related. An interesting fact is that there are more cases of Lymphedema than AIDS, ALS, Parkinson, MS and Muscular dystrophy combined.

For the event, we have recruited ambassadors from across the province to cycle, run, walk, and hike. Fifteen of them will be cycling a century each (100 miles/160KM), amounting to over 2000 KM for the cause.

As Hellen Keller said: “Alone we can do so little; together we do so much.”
