First You Walk the Walk
There is an old saying: "You can't really understand another person's experience until you've walked a mile in their shoes."
The Walk a Mile in HER Shoes® Red Deer Virtual Spring Edition, presented by Servus Credit Union, is being delivered in partnership between Red Deer College Nursing Students and the Outreach Centre. It is a pledge based, fundraising and public awareness campaign. The event features people raising pledges and walking one mile in women's high-heeled shoes. In response to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, this event has been adapted to be a VIRTUAL event. This means you will be able to complete your mile, in heels, anywhere!
Choose any day between June 5 and June 10, 2021, get your walk in, and challenge your friends to take a walk too!
Then You Talk the Talk
Just as walking in the shoes may at times be uncomfortable, so can talking about gender based violence. This event is an opportunity to get people talking! For preventative education, it helps people better understand and appreciate women's experiences, thus changing perspectives, helping improve gender relationships and decreasing potential for violence. For healing, it informs the community that services are available for recovery.
Put Yourself in HER Shoes®
Join RDC Nursing Students and The Outreach Centre and register for the Walk a Mile in HER Shoes® Red Deer Virtual Spring Edition event! Or donate and support a participant! It doesn't take much to make an impact. It takes a desire to make a difference, no matter how small.
Your Participation and Support are Important to Us
The fundraising efforts of all Walk a Mile in HER Shoes® Red Deer virtual spring edition participants allows The Outreach Centre to deliver programs which provide many services to women, men, and children who have chosen to pursue a healthier, safer, and more secure life. Our goal is to ensure anyone living in or leaving an abusive relationship has access to someone who can respond to their crisis and support them. All of The Outreach Centre services are confidential, free, and available to anyone who is experiencing domestic violence, homelessness, poverty, and many other barriers faced in challenging times.
Need more reasons to participate or support?
Each participant who raises $25 in pledges will have a stuffed animal donated on their behalf, and participants who raise over $100 will have a skateboard donated on their behalf! The toys will be included at Christmas time for children of families that are part of The Outreach Centre's Adopt-a-Family Christmas initiative.
Lokal Kitchen has donated a $25 gift card to their restaurant, and for every $25 a participant raises, they will have their name entered into a draw for the gift card.
You can be part of making an impact in our community too!
