2021 marks the 20th anniversary of 9-11
The Illinois Valley Striders are hosting our second annual run to honor 9-11. This run will be open to run/walk 9.11 kilometers in person or virtually in an effort to remember those lost on 9-11-2001 and those first responders that we have lost during and since that tragic day.
The virtual run can be completed anytime and anywhere from September 4, 2021 through September 13, 2021.
Note: due to COVID-19 social distancing precautions - only limited registration will be allowed on the day of event and registration will still have to be done online. No paper registration will be available.
Packet pickup will be from 7:30am to 8:30am on the day of the race (9/11) in Lower Glen Oak Park - near the Sonnemaker statue. Please park across the street in the Woodruff High School parking lot.
First 50 registrations will receive an IVS logo cooling towel!
These cooling towels are made of a 50% nylon, 50% polyester mesh fabric and are latex-free. They’re specialized towels with advanced absorption and wicking capabilities that can keep users cool for hours at a time. They can be wrapped around necks, shoulders, knees, foreheads, or just about anywhere else for instant relief from the heat. Before use, each towel needs to be soaked, twisted to release excess water, and then firmly snapped or briskly waved. After that, their wicking abilities set in, creating an even and speedy absorption effect, leading to cooling evaporation to comfort users for up to 2 full hours. Use wet for cooling, or even dry as a neck scarf or for covering faces to keep out dust and germs. Size: 31 1/2" W x 11 7/8"
The physical race will start at the bottom of Glen Oak Park at 9:11am on Saturday 9/11/21, with a moment of silence beforehand. The race will then follow the Rock Island Trail into the Springdale Cemetery and wind around it's perimeter, passing the grave of one of Peoria's own who lost their life on that day.
Update: The Air National Guard Band of the Midwest: the 566th Air Force Band will be providing music for the start of the race.
Awards will be presented to physical race participants as racers complete the course for the following categories:
- Best Overall Male Under 18
- Best Overall Male 18 - 49
- Best Overall Male 50 and over
- Best Overall Female Under 18
- Best Overall Female 18 - 49
- Best Overall Female 50 and over
The proceeds from this race will go to COPS IL to honor our first responders.
We hope you will join us so that no American will forget the sacrifice and loss on this day.
