The Walk & Run for rare — September 19, 2021
The Walk & Run for rare is back in 2021! The event will once again be virtual. That means anyone can get involved from anywhere!
How does it work?
- Register to walk or run 5km the week of September 19, 2021. You can complete your kilometres anytime between Monday, September 13 to Sunday, September 19.
- You can complete your walk or run with friends or family, around your neighbourhood, on your favourite trail, or anywhere else. All you need to do is walk or run 5km and you have completed the challenge!
- If you don't want to complete your walk or run on your own time, join one of the four pop-up walks! Staff will be leading 5km walks for any participant, and providing free giveaways!
- Registration is $25, or you can register for FREE by committing to raise $50 or more. All children 12 and under are also free to register.
There will still be prizes and the chance to make a difference for nature one step at a time together!

Supporting the Turn the Map Green Campaign
All funds raised from the 2021 Walk & Run for rare are supporting the Turn the Map Green campaign — every $2 raised protects 1 square metre of environmentally sensitive land.
The rare reserve has 24 different habitats rich in biodiversity and home to an array of flora and fauna. All registration fees and donations are directly helping this grassroots community effort to ensure these habitats are protected intact in perpetuity.
Be the one to make a difference for nature by turning the map green one step at a time!
In-Person Pop Up Walks
All registered participants of the 2021 Walk & Run for rare can join any or all of the four planned pop up walks. We miss seeing you in person! Staff will be leading 5km walks/hikes that you can join. Everyone who attends will receive free giveaways! Each walk is a loop and you will end where you started.
- Riverbluffs Loop – Wednesday, September 15 @ 6pm
- Scavenger hunt walk! All participants will be provided a printed out scavenger hunt to try to complete throughout the walk. This is a great walk for families!
- Uptown Waterloo – Saturday, September 18 @ 10am
- Coffee walk! At the 2.5km marker, participants will have the option to purchase for themselves a coffee or baked good to enjoy during the second half of the walk. Dog and stroller friendly.
- Edgewood Loop – Sunday, September 19 @ 10am
- Eramosa corridor walk! This is the walk for you if you are from Guelph or Rockwood. Join this walk and learn about rare’s land protection efforts in Wellington County. Part of this hike is on unimproved trail - please wear sturdy shoes and be prepared for uneven ground.
- ECO Loop – Sunday, September 19 @ 2pm
- Trash pick-up walk! All participants will have the option to pick up trash along the way to make sure that some of rare’s most popular trails are kept clean.
For more details on parking/meeting spots, and to sign up for these pop up walks, make sure to register for the 2021 Walk & Run for rare.
