Our story…

About CLF’s End CTE campaign:

CTE is a degenerative brain disease caused by repeated head impacts and primarily seen in contact sport athletes and military Veterans. CTE is associated with problems with thinking, memory, depression, anxiety, dysregulated behavior, and dementia.

100 years ago, CTE was called punch drunk because it was mostly seen in boxers, but only 45 cases were identified and little research was conducted until the Concussion Legacy Foundation co-founded the VA-BU-CLF Brain Bank in partnership with the US Department of Veterans Affairs and Boston University School of Medicine.

Now, thanks to the generous contributions of more than 1,000 brain donors and their families, summarized here in 1,000 Reasons for Hope, we know what causes CTE, we know how to prevent it, and we are learning how to diagnose and treat CTE in the living.

End CTE was launched in 2022 with two goals. First, we can prevent CTE through eliminating repetitive head impacts in youth sports. CTE is leading that effort through programs like Flag Football Under 14 and Safer Soccer. Second, we urgently need to learn how to cure CTE, and through the VA-BU-CLF Brain Bank and other research partnerships, CLF is working to advance efforts to learn how to diagnose and treat CTE in the living.
